    摘要: A regeneration device and method for sealing annular tears between the nucleus pulposus and the annulus fibrosus of an intervertebral disc. The regeneration device includes a trocar having a sharp tip at a distal end, an inner cavity, and a handle portion attached to a proximal end of the trocar. The device further includes a plunger coupled to a catheter that extends through the inner cavity. The regeneration method includes inserting the trocar into an intervertebral disc via Kambin's triangle, and once the trocar reaches the nucleus pulposus, the catheter is extended alongside the annulus fibrosus wall to surround the nucleus pulposus. A syringe is mounted to the plunger and injects a biochemical, biological and/or synthetic material through multiple ports in the catheter to form a collagen barrier that prevents the nucleus pulposus from protruding through the annulus fibrosus.

The knife includes an elongated tube that is operable to be inserted through a tubular retractor used in minimally invasive surgical procedures. One end of the elongated tube includes a curved head portion having a cutting blade formed on a top surface thereof and a suction port, and an opposite end of the tube is coupled to a handle having a chamber. A suction device can be coupled to an outlet port in the handle that causes blood and other surgical material to be drawn through the tube and out of the handle.

    摘要: A pedicle screw and rod system that has particular application for spinal fusion surgery. The system includes pedicle screws having ball-shaped heads that are threaded through pedicles of adjacent vertebra into the vertebral body. The system also includes two cannulated posts having a head portion with a planar portion and an opening for accepting the head of the pedicle screw in a secure and multi-axial engagement. The system further includes a tube portion that is coupled to the head portion and extends above the patient's skin. The system also includes a lordotic slotted rod that is slid down the tube portions to be positioned on top of the head portions of the posts so that the planar portions are locked within the slot. Bolts are then slid down the tube portions and are threaded to a threaded portion on the planar portion.

    摘要: A pedicle access device that has particular application for positioning a pedicle screw during a minimally invasive spinal fusion surgical procedure. The pedicle access device includes a positioning needle having a hollow tube and a specially designed tip that conforms with a facet complex of a vertebra proximate a pedicle. A targeting needle having a pointed end is inserted through the hollow tube of the positioning needle, and is secured thereto so the tip of the targeting needle extends out of the end of the positioning needle. The tip of the targeting needle allows the positioning needle to be accurately positioned on the pedicle, and the specially configured tip of the positioning needle allows it to be secured thereto without slipping.

    摘要: A method for providing an InVivo model of disc degeneration. The method includes percutaneously inserting a needle into a non-human surrogate disc, generally the disc of a rabbit, so that the needle ruptures the annulus of the disc. Fluoroscopy X-ray images can be used to visualize the placement of the needle to the proper location. By using the proper surrogate, rupture of the annulus of the disc will have a quick degenerative effect on the disc, which can be visualized using MRI or other suitable imaging devices. By studying the etiologies associated with disc degeneration of the surrogate, treatments can then be devised to attempt to reduce the rate of degeneration, reverse degeneration, or other disc treatment procedures.

    摘要: A protective lead shield for use during spinal surgery. The lead shield is intended to be draped over the back of a patient lying in the prone position during the surgical procedure. The lead shield includes a central opening that is positioned over the pathology being treated so as to allow the surgeon to gain access thereto with various surgical devices. The lead shield has an hour-glass shape where a narrow part of the shield is aligned with the opening. The wider ends of the shield allow the shield to be maintained in place on the patient, and the narrow part of the shield and the opening allow fluoroscopic X-rays to be taken of the spinal area being treated from both the top and the side. Thus, the surgical procedure can be effectively performed, the surgical area can be effectively X-rayed and the surgeon can be effectively protected from X-rays while the shield is in place.
