Abstract: An information reception device is provided with: operation surface which is adjusted to produce a characteristic index vibration by an object contact; a storage device stores candidate information (candidate information is related with the index vibration) which serves as a candidate of input information; a microphone which acquires observation information according to observation of the actual vibration arising in the surrounding environment; and a CPU. The CPU (selecting part) judges whether or not the index vibration exists in the observation information acquired. When the CPU judges that the index vibration exists, the CPU selects the candidate information which is related with the index vibration as the input information.

Abstract: Touch events can be detected using an ultrasound input device coupled to a surface, such as a surface of a piece of furniture or electronic device. The ultrasound input device can generate ultrasonic waves in the surface, the reflections of which can be measured by the ultrasound input device. When a touch is made to the surface (e.g., opposite the ultrasound input device), the physical contact can absorb some of the energy of the outgoing ultrasonic waves (e.g., the originally transmitted wave and any subsequent outgoing reflections). Energy measurements associated with the measured reflections can thus be used to identify touch events. Various techniques can be used to make the energy measurements and reduce identification of false touch events.

Abstract: A method for performing input sensing using an input device includes: receiving, at a sensing region of the input device, an input; obtaining, via receivers of the input device, measurements corresponding to the input, wherein obtaining the measurements comprises: separately driving multiple subsets of transmitters of the input device, and obtaining measurements corresponding to each separately-driven subset of transmitters via the receivers, wherein each separately-driven subset of transmitters comprises a plurality of non-contiguous transmitters; and generating, by a processing system of the input device, an image of the input based on the obtained measurements.

Abstract: Detecting a location of a touch input is disclosed. Each of a plurality of transmitters coupled to a propagating medium emits a signal that is distinguishable from other signals emitted from other transmitters. The signals from the transmitters are received from at least one receiver coupled to the propagating medium to detect the location of the touch input on a surface of the propagating medium as indicated by an effect of the touch input on each of the distinguishable signals.

Abstract: A portable communications device comprises an interactive touchscreen display (20) having a transparent outer surface member occupying substantially all of a front surface of the communications device. A casing provides a rear surface of the communications device. The device further comprises an audible sound transmitter and an audible sound receiver arranged so as to receive vocal sounds produced by a user when the device is placed against the user's head. An ultrasonic transmitter (24) is separate from the audible sound transmitter. An elongate aperture (28) has a minimum dimension less than 100 μm located between the transparent outer surface member and the casing. A channel connects the elongate aperture and the ultrasonic transmitter so as to permit ultrasonic signals to pass out of the elongate aperture.

Abstract: A touch sensitive device comprising a touch surface, a force exciter coupled to the touch surface to excite vibration in the surface in response to a signal sent to the exciter, with the touch surface and exciter together forming a coupled system and a signal generator to generate the signal, with the signal generator generating a carrier wave signal at frequencies within the frequency bandwidth of the coupled system and modulating the carrier wave signal with a complex modulation where the modulated carrier wave signal has a time response comparable to that of a low frequency signal which produces a desired haptic sensation whereby a user touching the touch surface excited by the exciter in response to the modulated carrier wave signal experiences the desired haptic sensation which is perceived at a frequency below the frequency bandwidth of the coupled system.

Abstract: A haptic output system configured to generate haptic effects, through a user input surface, by varying one or more haptic output characteristics of one or more haptic elements (e.g., vibrating elements, electrostatic elements, thermal elements, and so on) based on substantially real-time touch input and/or force input information. In this manner, the haptic output system effectively simulates the presence of a physical object (e.g., having textures, edges, features, mechanical responses, and so on) on the user input surface.

Abstract: A system for determining a user indication is disclosed. The system includes a communication interface configured to send a signal to be used to propagate a freely propagating signal through a propagating medium with a surface and receive the freely propagating signal that has been disturbed by a disturbance on the surface. The system also includes a processor coupled to the communication interface and configured to process the received signal to determine a user indication associated with the disturbance.

Abstract: This relates to system architectures, apparatus and methods for acoustic touch detection (touch sensing) and exemplary applications of the system architectures, apparatus and methods. In some examples, the acoustic touch sensing techniques described herein can be used on a glass surface of a display or touch screen. In some examples, an acoustic touch sensing system can be configured to be insensitive to contact on the device surface by water, and thus acoustic touch sensing can be used for touch sensing in devices that are likely to become wet or fully submerged in water.
