Abstract: A touch sensitive device comprising a touch surface, a force exciter coupled to the touch surface to excite vibration in the surface in response to a signal sent to the exciter, with the touch surface and exciter together forming a coupled system and a signal generator to generate the signal, with the signal generator generating a carrier wave signal at frequencies within the frequency bandwidth of the coupled system and modulating the carrier wave signal with a complex modulation where the modulated carrier wave signal has a time response comparable to that of a low frequency signal which produces a desired haptic sensation whereby a user touching the touch surface excited by the exciter in response to the modulated carrier wave signal experiences the desired haptic sensation which is perceived at a frequency below the frequency bandwidth of the coupled system.

Abstract: There is disclosed a method of designing a panel assembly for a vibratory panel device, the assembly comprising a panel which supports vibrations and two or more transducers coupled to the panel to transmit vibrations to or receive vibrations from the panel. The method comprises: obtaining the number of transducers to be used in the assembly and their relative positions; obtaining relationships between drive signals to be applied to the respective transducers to provide a desired effect; determining an optimization criterion for the assembly that depends on the obtained relationships; and determining one or more parameters for the respective transducers that satisfy the optimization criterion. Abstract: A method includes determining, for a piezoelectric cantilever-type transducer of a distributed mode loudspeaker adapted to cause vibration of a load, a subset of frequencies from a range of frequencies at which to output vibrations, in which the transducer includes two or more electrode pairs positioned along a length of the transducer and each electrode pair including a first electrode on a first side of a piezoelectric layer of the transducer and a second electrode on a second side of the piezoelectric layer of the transducer that is opposite to the first side; selecting, for the subset of frequencies, a respective input voltage for each of the two or more electrode pairs based on a relative position of each pair on the transducer; and applying the respective input voltage to each of the two or more electrode pairs to cause the transducer to generate a vibrational force.

Abstract: An actuator includes a frame that includes a panel extending in a plane and one or more pillars extending perpendicular from the plane. The actuator further includes a magnetic circuit assembly that includes a magnet and a voice coil, which are moveable relative to each other along an axis perpendicular to the plane of the panel. The actuator also includes one or more suspension members attaching the frame to a first component of the magnetic circuit assembly. Each suspension member includes a vertical segment attaching the suspension member to a corresponding one of the pillars. Each suspension member also includes a first arm extending away from the corresponding pillar to an end attached to the first component of the magnetic circuit assembly. During operation of the actuator, the first arm of the suspension member flexes to accommodate axial displacements of the magnet relative to the voice coil.

Abstract: An electromagnetic actuator includes an inner magnet arranged relative to an axis, an outer magnet arranged a radial distance from the axis, an inner radial wall of the outer magnet facing an outer radial wall of the inner magnet, the inner and outer radial walls being separated by an air gap, a voice coil arranged in the air gap separating the inner and outer magnets, and an actuator coupling plate attached to the voice coil. The inner magnet is axially magnetized and the outer magnet is radially magnetized. During operation of the device electrical activation of the voice coil causes axial motion of the actuator coupling plate.
