Abstract: An improved knife clamping system for use in an apparatus for processing wood, such as a flaker, chipper or waferizer, that employs a rotary disc or ring, cutting knives, holding locations mounted on the disc or ring to receive the cutting knives, clamping members to engage and hold the cutting knives in position and fasteners to mount the clamping members to the holding locations. The improvement comprises providing a surface having an undulating profile to engage against the cutting knives. The undulating surface can be formed on the clamping member, at the holding location or at both locations. The surface is shaped to deform to engage the cutting knives with a uniform clamping load upon securing of the fasteners to a pre-selected torque. The foregoing arrangement requires fewer fasteners while still maintaining an adequate clamping force on the cutting knives. This makes parts less expensive and reduces the time to change the knives as there are fewer parts to loosen and tighten.

Abstract: The present invention includes a rotatable cutting head assembly (12), such as for a planer or a jointer, which planes a work surface on a workpiece (22). The cutting head assembly (12) comprises a rotatable elongate support block (30), a pair of blades (32), and a pair of elongate retainers (34). Each blade (32) has a straight elongate cutting edge (50,51) which extends parallel to and is spaced radially from the longitudinal axis (36) of the support block (30). Each retainer (34) is attachable to the support block (30) to clamp a respective blade (32) therebetween. Retainers (34), blades (32) and support block (30) have cooperating alignment ribs (64) and elongate slots (52). The slots (52) extend parallel to the longitudinal axis of the support block. The cooperating alignment ribs and elongate slots maintain cutting edges (50,51) at equal radial distances from the longitudinal axis (36) while permitting the blades (32) to be longitudinally adjustable relative to the support block (30) to enable a user to offset any longitudinally aligned nicks formed on the cutting edges (50,51) during planing so that the cutting edges (50,51) create a smooth planar surface which is free of ridges on workpiece (22).

Abstract: A Rosser type debarker head has a plurality of rounded, indexable cutting teeth spaced in patterns of repeated rows running axially the length of the cylindrical surface, each tooth being spaced along the cylindrical surface so that the total cutting pattern produced by a single rotation of the head creates a uniform round toothed scalloped effect. Each tooth is shadowed by adjacent offset teeth so that only the portion of the round tooth outside of a cord representing essentially one-sixth of the circumference of the tooth is exposed to direct cutting impact. The remainder of the round tooth is shadowed by adjacent cutter teeth. As a result, the debarker head produces a uniform scalloped cut, producing a shallow, smooth cut upon the log with limited splintering, while reducing the impact on the teeth so that tooth life is significantly extended.

Abstract: A system is provided for installing, retaining and replacing the saw-teeth strip inserts of rotatable, cylindrical feedrolls, without concomitant damage thereto. More specifically, a plurality of circumferentially spaced, longitudinally extending grooves are formed in the body of the feedroll. Each groove is adapted to receive a pair of spaced, parallel saw-teeth strip inserts and maintain them at a predetermined position therein. A wedge is insertable into the groove between the inserts. The wedge is adapted to abut the lower portion of the inserts to clamp them against the groove side walls. A plurality of fasteners, such as allen head screws, are inserted through spaced, aligned bores formed in the wedge and are secured in the groove floor. Abstract: A cylindrical cutter head for a wood planing machine has mounted in its cumference a number of disposable knife blades which are clamped in place with the help of centrifugal wedges in lengthwise grooves.
