Abstract: An apparatus acts as a shield for radiopharmaceuticals and protects individuals from radioactivity includes a first body with a first hollow core and a second body with a second hollow core. The first hollow core fixedly communicates with two hollow stems open on the first edge of the first body. The hollow stems are symmetrically positioned around the center of the first edge. The first hollow core and second hollow core houses an insert. The insert houses a hypodermic syringe. A first connection means releasably communicates the first body with a dose applicator having two telescoping rods that slide inside the hollow stems. A second connection means releasably communicates the first body with the second body. The dose applicator slideably positions the insert and hypodermic syringe with a radiopharmaceutical into and out of the first body when the second body is removed.

Abstract: A container for storing and transporting needle cartridges containing radioactive materials used for medical procedures is disclosed. Such needle cartridges may include a radioactive shielding material which contains a portion of the radioactivity emitted by the radioactive material. The container of the present invention has an upper portion and a lower portion, and at least one of the portions includes a radiation shielding material, such as lead, steel or other appropriate shielding materials. Needle cartridges containing radioactive material are placed within the container for storage and shipping. The container secures the needle cartridges against lateral movement within the container to protect them from breakage or release of the radioactive materials contained in the needle cartridges. The radiation shielding material of the lower portion of the container may cooperate with the radiation shielding material of the device to container more of the emitted radiation that is contained by the device alone. The container and the holder may be sterilizable to allow such devices to be transported in sterilized form for medical use.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for transporting syringes containing radioactive material. The apparatus includes a radiopharmaceutical pig having an inner chamber in which a sharps container can be secured. The sharps container has a housing and an attachable cap. The method includes assembling the radiopharmaceutical pig so that the chamber of the radiopharmaceutical pig contains the syringe in the sharps container housing. The radiopharmaceutical pig is disassembled, where upon the syringe is removed, discharged, and then replaced in the sharps container housing. The cap of the sharps container is affixed to the housing of the sharps container, thus enclosing the contaminated syringe therein. The radiopharmaceutical pig is assembled so that its chamber contains the sharps container and the syringe. The radiopharmaceutical pig is transported to a disposal area, where it is disassembled and the sharps container containing the syringe is placed in a particular disposal container.

Abstract: An improved drawing station system for handling radioactive material for use in syringes in the health care industry. The system includes a drawing station, a syringe shield and two different radiopharmaceutical pigs. The drawing station has a base with a support and two arms mounted thereto to support a first radiopharmaceutical pig enclosing a container of radioactive material. The radiopharmaceutical pig is releasably mounted to the second arm so that the radiopharmaceutical pig is pivotable about two predetermined axes to position the container for penetration by the syringe needle to draw radioactive material from the container into the syringe.

Abstract: A radioactivity shielding assembly, suitable for transferring a radioactive substance with a reduced risk of human exposure and environmental contamination, includes a protective shield casing having a reservoir disposed in the casing for receiving the radioactive substance. Associated with the casing is a coupling structure for coupling the reservoir and casing directly to a receiver into which the radioactive substance is to be transferred. The casing includes a side shielding structure in which the reservoir is retained and two end shield structures which are removably attached to the side shield structure. The two end shield structures are removed from the side shield structure at the location at which the radioactive substance is to be discharged, but such removal leaves the reservoir protectively received in the side structure to maintain continued protection against radioactive exposure or contamination. A related method of transferring the radioactive substance is also described.

Abstract: A gun type device for removing radioactive gas from a sealed hypodermic type vial. The device includes a sealable recess including a pair of concentric hollow needles which penetrate the vial upon the closing of the chamber with a vial still remaining within a lead shielded container which then forms a part of the sealed chamber. An inlet port under control of a push button valve conducts an inert gas under compression through one of said needles to displace and mix with the radioactive gas and force the same through the other of said needles to an outlet port controlled by a second valve.

Abstract: A syringe shield having an inner generally cylindrical shell formed of plastic material. The shell has an elongated slot extending longitudinally therein and is open-ended at its rear end and narrows radially inward at its front end to form a tapered portion. A generally cylindrical body formed of radiation-shielding material is proportioned such that its inner surface conforms generally to the outer surface of the inner shell. The body has an elongated slot therein which is aligned with the slot in the inner shell. An outer shell, formed of plastic material, conforms to the shape of the outer surface of the body and has an elongated slot aligned with the slots in the inner shell in the body. An elongated optically transparent radiation shielding member is proportioned to fit in the elongated slot in the body. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the inner shell has a plurality of flexible plastic protrusions on the inner surface thereof. In this embodiment, the body tapers radially toward its axis at the front end thereof and a plastic ring-shaped collar joins the front edges of the inner and outer shells.

Abstract: A shield for a hypodermic syringe adapted to surround the barrel thereof to protect the user against radiation emanating from radioactive fluids contained therein. The shield is lead-lined, and is provided with a bayonet fitting element engaging the manually engaged end of the syringe. A coil spring cooperates with the bayonet fitting element to prevent wobbling between the barrel of the syringe and the barrel of the shield. The barrel of the shield is so configured that a small end of the barrel of the syringe is uncovered to permit visual inspection of flow to and from the syringe.
