A cylindrical gear unit which includes a gear housing, a gear pinion and a gear wheel, the gear pinion being fixed to a shaft which is rotatably journalled in bearings supported by at least one bearing support. One of the bearing supports comprises a sleeve in which a roller bearing is fixedly mounted, a fixing plate supported by the gear housing, as well as a disc-shaped rib portion which interconnects the sleeve and the fixing plate. The rib portion extends substantially along the entire length of the sleeve and the fixing plate and is substantially parallel to a tangential plane on the contact line between the gear pinion and the gear wheel. In addition, at least one stop face for the sleeve is arranged at a small distance from the outside of the sleeve on at least that side of the sleeve facing away from the gear wheel.

The first and second pairs of intermediate gears are capable only of rotation in a gear casing in which they are mounted but the drive pinion and the driven pinion are capable of radial movement in the casing. As shown the driven pinion has an axial extension with curved teeth engaged in one end of a coupling sleeve with internal curved teeth and a portion of the shaft has curved teeth engaged with the curved teeth in the other end of the sleeve, the shaft being mounted in bearings.

The transfer gear has an annular body with external teeth which surrounds its supporting shaft with clearance, a flexible ring being disposed in that clearance with freedom of limited radial deformation and in positive engagement with both the shaft and the gear body to interconnect them for joint rotation. Teeth or other coupling formations on the inner and outer ring surfaces, peripherally offset from one another and separated by freely deformable ring sections, engage complementary formations on the shaft and within the gear body, respectively.

A shaft carrying a cutter head is bolted to the output shaft of a speed reducer gear in coaxial configuration and having a casing journalled on the shaft. The casing carries plural drive motors and the gear has a combining stage as input. The shafts are mounted in thrust and pendulum bearings in a frame and the casing is held against rotation on that frame. The output stage of the gear is a planetary gear with a spider from which extends the output shaft and a hollow shaft and in opposite directions. The casing is journalled on the shaft by bearings engaging the hollow shaft and the output shaft at opposite sides of the spider.

A high horsepower motor and gear system is provided in which the motor has a hollow drive shaft and the first stage drive gear has a long shaft extending through the hollow drive shaft and fixedly attached thereto at its far end, the latter shaft being sufficiently resilient to absorb positional errors which would otherwise result in high dynamic load exerted between the first gear pair. The system permits reduction in gear size which would otherwise be required, close coupling and ease of alignment between the two mentioned shafts and between the first stage drive and driven gears, being particularly useful as the drive for an aerator impeller.
