Abstract: An anesthesia apparatus which comprises at least two flow meters, an oxygen gas supply means for supplying oxygen gas to one of said flow meters, a nitrous oxide gas supply means for supplying nitrous oxide gas to another one of said flow meters, at least two flow rate adjustment valves disposed between the one of said flow meters and said oxygen gas supply means and between said another one of said flow meters and said nitrous oxide gas supply means, respectively, each of said flow rate adjustment valve including a valve element having a predetermined shape to vary the rate of flow of each of said gases substantially in proportion to the amount of movement of said valve element, a flow control means connected to said flow rate adjustment valves for actuating said valves, and a flow rate adjustment means operatively connected to said flow control means and operative to set a selected angular position of said flow control means with respect to said flow rate adjustment valves for thereby determining the relative proportions of said gases, said flow control means being operative to move said flow rate adjustment valves while maintaining said selected angular position for thereby varying the total rate of flow of said gases substantially without varying the relative proportions thereof.

Abstract: This disclosure pertains to a gas scavenger apparatus utilized to recover anesthesia-logical gases derived during surgical procedures and to dispose same to a closed vacuum line substantially limiting the inadvertant escapage into the atmosphere. A reservoir bag is connected to the patient's anesthetic circuit, which in turn is connected to a scavenger valve. The vacuum line constantly empties the reservoir bag drawing off the waste gas accumulated therein. When the reservoir bag is substantially empty, a valve admits ambient air, as well as waste gas, into a chamber emptied by the vacuum line. Thus, the vacuum line does not act on the patient's anesthetic circuit, serving only to empty the reservoir bag as waste gas accumulates therein.

Abstract: A volatile anesthetic vaporizing apparatus including a concentration control flow valve means actuated by a substantially linear rotary dial for dividing an inflowing gas stream into two separate streams, one stream being passed over liquid anesthetic to pick up a vapor and the other stream flowing through a bypass duct. The gas stream flowing over liquid anesthetic flows through a temperature responsive valve means, the latter being actuated by a temperature sensitive bimetallic strip which is in direct contact with the vapor saturated air stream which is relatively cool due to the vaporization of the liquid anesthetic. The valve means so situated in the vapor stream essentially does not include any moving parts. Such valve means is formed by the spaced mounting of a planar valve element on a planar surface having a vapor opening therein or an inlet passage. The planar valve element has a portion of material removed therefrom and being in contact with a bimetallic strip tends to pivot about the removed portion thereof in response to temperature changes in the vapor saturated stream flow. Such a valve structure avoids problems of sticking, provides substantially laminar flow therethrough and automatically compensates for changes in the temperature of vapor saturated air stream as it leaves the vaporizing chamber apparatus once the volumetric anesthetic percentage has been set on the aforesaid rotary dial to maintain such percentage concentration constant over a substantial temperature range.

Abstract: A device for regulating the positive end expiratory pressure of a patient under anesthesia is disclosed. The device is suitable for insertion into an anesthesia circuit and comprises an enclosed container separated into two chambers by a wall terminating below the top of the container. A liquid contained in the container is movable between the two chambers by passing over the wall when the container is tilted. The container top has two openings through which two tubes project. A long tube extends downwardly and terminates at the bottom of one chamber and a short tube terminates near the top of the container. Air exhausted by the patient passes downwardly through the long tube and bubbles upwardly through the liquid located in the associated chamber of the container. The air, after bubbling upwardly, exhausts through the short tube. The level of liquid through which the exhausted air bubbles creates a resistance which regulates positive end expiratory pressure.

Abstract: To provide a safe environment for operating theatre occupants whilst anaesthetic gas is administered to a patient, exhaled gas from the patient is passed through a replaceable, mantransportable absorber unit to absorb the anaesthetic gas employed. The absorber unit comprises a cylindrically walled hollow drum having radial end walls; a central inlet in one end wall, the other end wall being provided with a plurality of angularly spaced apertures; a perforated retainer spaced inwardly from each end wall; and a predetermined fixed quantity of absorber material retained by and between the two perforated retainer plates, said material comprising carbon activated to absorb anaesthetic gas exhaled by the patient. In use, the weight of the absorber unit increases as exhaled anaesthetic gas is absorbed therein, and when the absorber unit attains a predetermined increased weight it is replaced by a fresh unit.

Abstract: Anaesthetic gas is maintained in a closed system and exhausted in an area external to the area wherein the anaesthetic equipment is operated according to the disclosed apparatus. The apparatus for administration of anaesthesia includes a controlled source of anaesthetic gas, a mask, check valves on either side of the mask, carbon dioxide absorber, rubber bag, and means for removal of circulated anaesthetic gas from the system. Inlet and outlet from the system may be conveniently controlled thereby maintaining substantially the same pressure throughout the system. The apparatus disclosed provides that harmful anaesthetic gases exhausted from the system do not reach the ambient air surrounding the apparatus, thus the staff working in the area of the apparatus is protected from exposure to the gases.

Abstract: A liquid injector for use in a medical respirator having a cylinder mounted for movement within a cavity. The cavity has a supply of liquid thereto and as the cylinder moves therethrough, it entraps a quantity of liquid within the cylinder at the point when it is sealed against a closure within the cavity.
