    Abstract: A white star pyrotechnic illuminant composition, useful in US military M127A1 parachuted hand held signals (HHS), which illuminant provides surprisingly enhanced luminous intensity and luminous efficiency versus the current M127A1 U.S. military HHS white star pyrotechnic illuminant. The inventive illuminant formulation includes a mixture of powdered sodium nitrate, magnesium, alkyl polysulfide polymer and a binder; wherein the magnesium and alkyl polysulfide is preferably recovered from the demilitarization of obsolete munitions to realize a significant savings.

    Abstract: A composition of matter for an incendiary device includes a thermate component consisting of strontium nitrate Gr A, black iron oxide Gr B, aluminum Gr D Cl 5, aluminum Gr E Cl 6, sulfur Gr E, and polyacrylic rubber; and an ignition component consisting of potassium nitrate, titanium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, charcoal, and polyacrylic rubber, wherein the thermate component consists of a barium nitrate free thermate formulation, and wherein the ignition component consists of a lead free ignition formulation. A parts by weight composition of the thermate component consists of 20.59% strontium nitrate Gr A, 48.04% black iron oxide Gr B, 17.57% aluminum Gr D Cl 5, 9.88% aluminum Gr E Cl 6, 1.96% sulfur Gr E, and 1.96% polyacrylic rubber, and a parts by weight composition of the ignition component consists of 66% potassium nitrate, 11% titanium, 8% aluminum, 6% silicon, 2% sulfur, 5% charcoal, and 2% polyacrylic rubber. Preferably, the first and second components are consolidated together using a ram having a sharp-edged profile.

    Abstract: Non-lethal payloads may be customized for particular uses and desired visual and audible incapacitation based upon the selection of igniter/activators and illuminants used with the non-lethal payloads. Non-lethal payloads employing high flame temperature igniter/activators and illuminants of powder metals, powdered metals combined with oxidizers, and powdered metals combined with heat-activated chromophores may produce improved “flashes” and “bangs” for non-lethal payloads used with diversionary or other devices. Such devices and methods of producing illuminance and noise are also disclosed.
