摘要: An optical switching apparatus in an optical communication network selectively combines and separates, using OTDM and/or WDM, optical signal samples that are obtained by a spread spectrum technique or a combination of optical signal samples that are obtained by a spread spectrum technique and optical signal samples that are carried over discrete channel wavelengths. In upstream communication, when optical signal samples that are received at the optical switching apparatus include upstream optical signal samples that are obtained by a spread spectrum technique, the optical switching apparatus optically converts the optical signal samples provided thereto into a broadband combined series of upstream optical signal samples and routes the broadband combined series of upstream optical signal samples to a destination route. In downstream communication, when the optical switching apparatus receives a broadband series of downstream optical signal samples obtained by utilizing a spread spectrum technique, the optical switching apparatus optically converts the broadband series of downstream optical signal samples into an integer number nn>1 of series of downstream optical signal samples that include at least one of the following: broadband series of downstream optical signal samples; and series of downstream optical signal samples having the downstream optical signal samples carried over discrete channel wavelengths. The nn series of downstream optical signal samples are then routed to nn routes respectively. Related apparatus and methods are also described.

摘要: A method and apparatus for converting bursty, packetized data traffic from a wide bandwidth network to a constant, average rate traffic on a payload network having a narrower bandwidth is disclosed. The method includes converting a packet burst received from the wide bandwidth network to a serial stream having first and second pluralities of bytes, the second plurality of bytes having only idle bytes; substituting a place keeping flag for said second plurality of bytes thereby providing a reduced data; encapsulating the reduced data in a second packet; and providing the second packet to the narrower bandwidth network at a constant, average traffic rate. The method also includes converting the second packet received from the narrower bandwidth network to a second serial stream; substituting a plurality of idle bytes for the place keeping flags; converting the second serial stream and substituted idle bytes to a third packet; and providing the third packet to the wide bandwidth network.

摘要: Technology is proposed for estimating one or more characteristics of a main signal transmitted via a communication link, wherein the main signal is composed from a number of component signals possibly comprising respective data signals and transmitted via a number of respective communication channels. The technology comprises providing an analyzing circuit independent from the communication link, transmitting a probe data signal in the analyzing circuit, monitoring a bit error rate (BER) parameter associated with the probe data signal and introducing into the analyzing circuit at least a portion of energy of the main signal as an interference signal. The technology allows judging about characteristics of the main signal based on changes in the monitored BER parameter of the probe data signal.

摘要: A method for utilizing a Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) in an Ethernet network wherein a number of VLANs are defined and a plurality of Ethernet switching nodes (A, B, C D E, F, G H) are interconnected via their ports (A1, . . . ,H4) so that each of the ports is initially assigned to one or more VLANs, and each of the VLANs is intended to enable traffic between two or more edge ports (D3, B3). The method comprises also-called pruning procedure initiated upon establishing a new STP topology (30) related to one or more VLANs. This procedure concerns a broadcast domain of at least one of the VLANs and is aimed at obtaining a sub-tree for each pruned VLAN in the new STP topology. The sub-tree is usually shrunk, bound by the edge ports assigned to the corresponding pruned VLAN, and thus eliminates broadcast traffic of the pruned VLAN to any Ethernet switch extending beyond the obtained sub-tree.
