Perimeter receiver fiber optics are spaced apart from a central source fiber optic and receive light reflected from the surface of the object being measured. Light from the perimeter fiber optics pass to a variety of filters. The system utilizes the perimeter receiver fiber optics to determine information regarding the height and angle of the probe with respect to the object being measured. Under processor control, the color measurement may be made at a predetermined height and angle. Various color spectral photometer arrangements are disclosed. Translucency, fluorescence and/or surface texture data also may be obtained. Audio feedback may be provided to guide operator use of the system. The probe may have a removable or shielded tip for contamination prevention.

Abstract:
A workstation with multiple, functionally related displays clustered under and controlled by a common transparent overlay control device. The position of a hand-held stylus is sensed by the overlay control device and is used as a system input to control system operations, system communications and input, manipulation and editing of images displayed on the displays. Control of certain workstation operations is achieved by directing the stylus towards function symbols which are affixed to the overlay surface. Actuators or other adjustment mechanisms are provided for adjustment of the height and pitch of the workstation for the comfort of the operator. Further, the workstation provides integrated data audio communication over ordinary narrow-band telephone lines or high speed data lines with other linked workstations.
Abstract:
The present invention provides means and methods for generating high resolution color computer generated graphic elements, such as lines, circles and curves, using a modified color-under coding system. A portion of the original luminance grey scale is reassigned or reallocated for substitution with data for high resolution graphic elements. High resolution graphic data are introduced by a user-operated input device via a control device such as a computer. The input luminance signal is digitally limited and stored in video random access memory (VRAM). A level detector detects the Y signal level to determine the presence of certain Y signal levels. Memory look-up tables provide appropriate user-determined substitute values for the Y, I and Q data values where certain, preselected Y signal levels are detected.
Abstract:
An improved light to frequency converter optical sensor and method using electronic bias. Adjustable gain also may be provided. A summing circuit sums electrical current from a photo detector and electrical current from a bias current circuit and provides the summed current to an integrator. A threshold detector comparator circuit has an input coupled to the output of the integrator and an output providing a series of pulses. The series of pulses has a frequency based on the light received by the photo detector and the electrical current from the bias current circuit.
Abstract:
A method including the determination of color information of an object is disclosed. Data is generated of the object with an image generation device having a field of view. The object and a reference implement having one or more regions of predetermined optical properties are positioned in the field of view of the image generation device. Data is generated of the reference implement, which includes a positional location attribute. Based on the positional location attribute a position of the one or more regions of predetermined optical properties of the reference implement in the field of view of the image generation device is determined by a processing system without operator identification of the position of the reference implement in the field of view of the image generation device. Color information of the object is generated by adjusting the data generated of the object based on the data generated of the reference implement. The color information may include value, chroma and hue information, RGB values, XYZ coordinates, or Lab values. The color information may be transmitted electronically to a remote location. The object may be human skin. The object and the reference implement may be positioned so as to be subject to a substantially corresponding lighting condition.
Abstract:
An apparatus measuring optical characteristics including position detection is disclosed. A processor is coupled to a display. A first optical sensor makes a first measurement, and a second optical sensor makes a second measurement. A source of illumination and the first optical sensor determine a minimal distance between the apparatus and an external object such that illumination emitted by the source is not received by the first optical sensor when the apparatus is less than the minimal distance from the external object. A position of the apparatus with respect to an object and an optical property of light received by the apparatus are determined. A transparent member with a thickness less than the minimal distance may provide illumination external to the apparatus and receive light from external to the apparatus.
