A cold-cathode fluorescent discharge tube has a pair of electrodes for performing discharge between the electrodes in response to the application of a voltage therebetween. The fluorescent discharge tube of the invention includes an auxiliary electrode provided in the vicinity of one of the pair of electrodes, and a unit for applying the voltage between the pair of electrodes and between the auxiliary electrode and the one of the electrodes. With the auxiliary electrode, a discharge is firstly started between the auxiliary electrode and the one of the electrodes in response to the application of the voltage between the pair of electrodes. Thereafter, a discharge is started between the pair of electrodes. Thus, the start discharge is generated in the discharge tube in a relatively short period of time even if the discharge tube is set in the off state for a long time, particularly in the dark at a low temperature.

A mercury vapor discharge lamp such as a negative glow discharge lamp includes a light-transmitting envelope containing a noble gas fill material. An anode electrode and a cathode electrode are spacedly located within the envelope. An amalgam-forming material for regulating the mercury vapor pressure of the lamp is disposed within the envelope. In order to increase the mercury vapor pressure and consequently the light output of the lamp at low ambient temperatures, a heating element is disposed within the envelope and in close thermal proximity to the amalgam-forming material. A thermostatic switch coupled to the heating element is activated when the temperature adjacent the amalgam-forming material is below a predetermined temperature.

A starting circuit for an electrodeless high intensity discharge lamp comprises a high efficiency power supply for providing a radio frequency signal to a starting probe disposed proximate the arc tube of the lamp. The power supply may comprise either a Class-D or Class-E power amplifier having an output resonant circuit tuned to a substantially higher frequency than the operating frequency of the signal provided to the excitation coil by the lamp ballast to ensure minimal interaction between the starting circuit and the ballast. The output resonant circuit includes an inductance coupled in series with a capacitance that preferably comprises the capacitance between the excitation coil and the starting probe. After initiating the arc discharge, the starting circuit is deactivated.

The circuit breaker includes a glass bulb, first and second electrical leads sealed into and passing through the glass bulb, and a bimetallic element disposed within the bulb and having first and second end portions. The first end portion of the bimetallic element is affixed to the first electrical lead while the second end portion of the bimetallic element is formed to be spaced from the second electrical lead at a first elevated temperature and in contact with the second electrical lead at ambient temperature and at a second elevated temperature higher than the first elevated temperature. The contact points of the circuit breaker at ambient and at the second elevated temperature are at the same location within the breaker.
