A planetary transmission having three planetary gear sets (front, intermediate and rear) and a plurality of friction devices and two one-way devices for establishing four forward and one reverse ratio. The intermediate set multiplies the reaction of the front set to increase the reaction of the rear set to provide a gear reduction in the first ratio. The one-way devices are connected to the rear set reaction member and lock-up on opposite directions, so that a member of the intermediate set, connected with one of the one-way devices, is stationary in first gear and rotates freely in second gear. The other one-way device is connected to ground to maintain the rear set reaction member stationary in both the first and second gear ratios. Third gear is established through the front set only, and reverse is established through the rear set only.

This invention relates to a vehicle transmission, including a torque converter, which is capable of producing gentle shifts between different gear ratios. This is attained by releasing one of the bladed components in the torque converter during a gear shift. In more detail, a torque converter is of the rotating casing type and the transmission includes a two speed gear having a holding clutch which may take either of two positions, viz. high and low, and the releasable bladed component is automatically released from the rotating casing when a holding clutch is changed from one position to another. The releasable bladed component may be the pump component or the turbine component of the torque converter.

A power transmission includes an engine-driven lock-up type torque converter for driving a speed changing gear shift mechanism shiftable to different speed ranges by solenoid operated clutch valves. An electronic controller provides output signals to operate the clutch valves and also to inhibit lock-up in certain speed ranges. The controller receives input signals from a manually operable multiposition speed range selection switch; from speed sensors on the torque converter and the gear shift mechanism; and from an engine throttle position control. The control effects automatic shifting to selected speed ranges and automatically shifts itself to maintain selected speeds; introduces a time delay in each transitional speed range to prevent hunting; effects downshifting, shifting to neutral and reversal only when correct speed ranges are reached; avoids shifting to neutral unless that position is actually selected; and performs other functions.

A chain and sprocket transfer drive is connected intermediate the two toric units in one transmission for transferring the combined output from the two toric units to the fluid torque converter and output shaft on an axis parallel to that of the input shaft and toric units, and in another transmission for transferring the output of the input shaft to the two toric units whose combined output is transferred axially to the fluid torque converter such that the in-line transmission is parallel to the input shaft. Further embodiments provide for dual output shafts which may be operated together or independently of one another.
