    摘要: An acousto-optic band reject light filter is disclosed. The light filter includes an optically anisotropic medium, such as a birefringent crystal, in which an acoustic wave is excited at a certain selected radiofrequency corresponding to a selected optical frequency to be rejected. The crystal is disposed to receive an incident light beam containing the selected optical frequency to be rejected. The light beam is collinearly diffracted on the acoustic wave within the optically anisotropic medium to diffract light of a first polarization and of the selected optical frequency related to the acoustic frequency into light of a second polarization. The diffracted light beam is then passed through a polarization analyzer to reject from the diffracted light beam light of the second polarization while retaining in the diffracted light beam light of the first polarization. The selectable frequency in the light beam which is to be rejected can be tuned over a wide band by tuning the frequency of the acoustic wave within the crystal.

    摘要: The opening time or framing time of an optical gate, which comprises a pair of crossed polarizers and disposed therebetween a medium in which birefringence can be optically induced, is reduced by applying sequentially to the medium first and second high intensity, fast rise time, orthogonally polarized optical control pulses delayed with respect to one another by a time Delta t corresponding to the desired opening time of the gate. The first pulse opens the gate, i.e., induces birefringence in the gate medium and thereby permits an optical signal to be gated to pass through both polarizers. At a time Delta t later the second pulse closes the gate, i.e., cancels the birefringence induced by the first pulse thereby causing the optical signal to be absorbed by one of the polarizers.

    摘要: An electronically tunable acousto-optic filter is disclosed of the type wherein light of a first polarization is diffracted on an acoustical wave traveling collinearly of the light in an anisotropic birefringent medium to shift the polarization of the light from a first polarization to a second polarization. The intensity of the acoustic wave in the birefringent medium is varied to vary the ratio of the intensity of the light diffracted from the first polarization into the second polarization. The band pass of the acousto-optic filter is electronically tuned by varying the frequency of the acoustic wave in the birefringent medium. The acousto-optic device may be employed as an attenuator, chopper, or modulator for light.

    摘要: Optical circulator or storage ring apparatus employing a nonreciprocal optical device and reflecting means to store optical energy. The device has the property that if a light beam is projected to it in one direction it is totally reflected and if projected to it in a second direction it is totally transmitted. By employing this device, optical energy may be coupled into and out of the circulator without optical loss. By exercising control over the polarization of the energy the circulator converts it so that it may be supplied in either continuous wave or pulse form. If a nonlinear crystal is located in the circulator in the path of the energy the apparatus acts to convert from a fundamental wavelength to a predetermined harmonic of that wavelength.
