A method for authenticating a printed document is described. A document producer sends information to be included in a document to an authentication authority. The authentication authority cryptographically generates an authentication code from this information, and sends the authentication code back to the document producer. The document producer then prints the document, including both the information and the authentication code, and a bar code representing the authentication code. A document checker scans in the bar code, and cryptographically checks the authentication code against the information in the document.

The method includes the following steps: several watermarks (204, 224, 244) are generated independently (304, 306, 308) by different cryptographic watermarking mechanisms controlled utilising information permanently associated within the article or product (100); and each watermark is embedded in a linked cryptographic manner (160, 162, 164). Subsequently, the watermarks can be scanned and digitised (410). The authenticity of the article (100) can be determined by verifying the correctness of extracted watermarks and the encryption links (160, 162, 164) among them. Also disclosed is a method of embedding an invisible watermark (714) in an official seal (712) incorporated in an electronic article or document (700).

A second device is provided for receiving from a payee a request to validate a check having an RFID tag associated therewith. The system further comprises an RFID repository. A processor is provided for (i) receiving check information from the payor, (ii) updating the RFID repository with check information received from the payor, (iii) receiving scanned check information from the payee, (iv) comparing the scanned check information received from the payee with certain information retrieved from the RFID repository, and (v) determining if the check is valid based upon the comparison of the scanned check information received from the payee with the certain information retrieved from the RFID repository. Preferably, the RFID repository comprises a central RFID repository.

Universally available preprinted forms are used in a general purpose printing device to allow for the subsequent verification of the authenticity of a printed document such as a ticket, stamp, check, or money order. In operation, the user accesses the seller of the goods/services and during an information exchange with the seller there is inputted at least a portion of the preprinted data from the form. The seller then uses this information to formulate a printable control indicia which is then printed on the form at the user's location. When the form is subsequently presented to the seller, for example when the user uses the form he/she printed, the preprinted portion of the form is used to obtain a decipher key which in turn is used to decipher the control indica. If desired, a special security marking may be associated with the form for additional security. Inability to decode the control indicia indicates that the printed material on the form may not be authentic. A vending machine is shown in one embodiment.

A personal data/time notary device is embodied in a token device such as a “smart card”. The portable notary device includes an input/output (I/O) port, which is coupled to a single integrated circuit chip. The I/O port may be coupled to a conventional smart card reading device which in turn is coupled to a PC, lap-top computer or the like. A tamper resistant secret private key storage is embodied on the chip. The private key storage is coupled to the processor which, in turn, is coupled to a permanent memory that stores the program executed by the processor. At least one clock is embodied on the card. A second clock 14 and a random value generator 10 are also preferably coupled to the processor. The device combines digital time notarization into a digital signature operation to ensure that a time stamp is always automatically present. The user does not need to be involved in any additional decision making as to whether time stamping is necessary.

A method for inhibiting the counterfeiting of electronic cash smart cards that use microchips for monetary stored value or digital identity cards that use microchips to control the transfer of data. Such electronic cash cards have recently been counterfeited by the use of electronic techniques to break the security codes. Such counterfeiting can be inhibited by bonding an optical memory stripe to the smart card with pre-recorded or post-recorded validation data at one or multiple locations on the cards. This optical validation data would be read with a photodetector array and could be transmitted to the recipient during funds transfer and/or used locally to control dispensing of cash or data. Thus successful counterfeiting of the modified electronic cash or digital identity card would require meeting exacting electronic and optical requirements.

A document authentication control device has a card positioning device with a document insertion region, an optical scanner, a data processor that receives data from the optical scanner, a database for storing processed optical image data, and a display screen for displaying document, authentication, and other data. The data processor correlates an image region of a document and a reference region of the document to corresponding image and reference regions of the document retrieved from the database, thereby determining the authenticity of the document. The reference region is a region of the document that is spaced away from the image region of the document.
