A color liquid crystal display projector has a light source with a radiating element (e.g., arc or incandescent) and a liquid crystal display (LCD). The LCD includes an array of multiple picture elements or pixels that each have separate color component sub-pixels (e.g., red, green and blue). Multiple differently inclined dichroic mirrors angularly separate the light into light beams of different color components. An integrating lens array relay system has a pair of planar lens arrays that form multiple spatially separated images of the angularly-color separated light components. An array of microlenses is positioned adjacent to the LCD. Each microlens is in one-to-one alignment with LCD pixels along at least one dimension and images the spatially separated images upon multiple pixels in at least the one dimension.

In an LCD projector, a color mixing optical system for mixing color beams transmitted through LCD elements includes an optical path length adjuster in three light paths from a light source to the LCD elements. The adjuster includes polarization beam splitters, phase plates, and light-beam reflectors. The numbers of reflections of the color beams in the optical paths from the light source to the projection lens are set only to odd values or only to even values. The adjusters are arranged and configured to equalize the respective optical path lengths to each other. With this configuration, the relative distribution of intensity of illumination is substantially equalized for the beams illuminating the respective LCD elements. Compounding the beams, there is attained a projected screen image with a satisfactory white balance and homogeneous chromaticity and luminance. Consequently, there is implemented an LCD projector capable of projecting on a screen an image having a favorable white balance and uniform chromaticity and luminance.

The beamsplitter/staggerer is adapted to split the narrow line of laser light into at least two parallel lines of light, and to split each of the parallel lines of light into regions, such that substantially all of the light from the illumination system falls onto each of the modulator pixel elements (19) in each of the rows. In one embodiment, the beamsplitter/staggerer comprises a pattern of reflecting areas (26) and transmitting areas (27) wherein a shape of the regions defined by the beamsplitter/staggerer matches a shape of the modulator pixel elements (19).

An optical projector is described that orients its optics engine preferably vertically within an enclosure that is higher than it is wide or deep. The invented optics engine uses a prismatic cube for color separation or beam splitting, with the prismatic elements within the cube being secured within a durable frame that mounts the three color light valves, e.g. twisted nematic liquid crystal display (LCD)-type shutters, in a predefined position and orientation relative to the prismatic cube. In order to improve image quality and brightness, especially of the notoriously difficult-to-reproduce green color, red and blue beams are S polarized, as is conventional, but the green beam is P-polarized. The invented optical projector preferably includes a frame having a footing portion for resting on a support surface, a light source high above the footing portion, optical convolution structure downstream from the light source for reverse-bending downwardly flowing light from the source, light modulation structure near the reverse bend region for infusing the light with image information and for directing modulated light upwardly in a projectable, image-containing stream of light and outward-projection directing structure high on the frame for receiving and outwardly directing such stream of light.

The first exposed side is formed on one edge of the affixed side of the first triangular prism. Similarly, the second triangular prism and the fourth triangular prism are attached to each other such that there is a second step difference on the same edge, and a second exposed side is formed on one edge of the affixed surface of the second triangular prism. This invention concerns chromatic light separators, and is particularly intended to reduce their dimensions. A chromatic separator in accordance with the invention contains at least two selective wave length mirrors. According to one characteristic of the invention, the two selective mirrors are nested holographic mirrors. The invention is particularly suitable for three-color rear-projection type picture projectors using liquid crystal screens.
