摘要: The present invention is directed to additives for coal-fired furnaces, particularly furnaces using a layer of slag to capture coal particles for combustion. The additive(s) include iron, mineralizer(s), handling aid(s), flow aid(s), and/or abrasive material(s). The iron and mineralizers can lower the melting temperature of ash in low-iron, high alkali coals, leading to improved furnace performance.

摘要: Hazardous waste is formed into non-hazardous non-leaching aggregate by introducing the material to a rotary kiln where the large solids are at least partially combusted to form a primary aggregate. Gaseous combustion by-products and waste fines from the waste materials are introduced into at least one oxidizer having water-cooled metal walls. Some of the waste fines are melted to form a molten slag-like material that is removed from the apparatus and cooled to form non-hazardous aggregate. The portion of the material in the oxidizer that is not melted, is cooled, neutralized and subjected to a solid gas separation. The solid is reintroduced to the oxidizer with the primary aggregate where they are either melted or entrained within the molten material and become an integral part of the non-hazardous aggregate.

摘要: A hearth arrangement for a furnace which melts refuses carried on the hearth arrangement comprises a plurality of hearth blocks arranged like a stair. The heart blocks are inclined stepwise in a refuse carrying direction and each hearth block has a width direction perpendicular to the refuse carrying direction. Each hearth block is divided into two block elements in the width direction of the hearth block and the two block elements are joined to each other by springs which exerts a biasing force on the block elements in the width direction of the hearth block. A clearance is formed between each two adjacent hearth blocks to tolerate heat expansion of the hearth blocks. Each block has a protuberance extending over a next hearth block located in the ash carrying direction such that the ash does not flow into the clearance between the hearth blocks. A convex portion is formed on a contacting plane of one block element and a concave portion is formed in a contacting plane of the other block element such that the convex portion engages with the concave portion to ensure a tight engagement of two block elements.

摘要: Apparatus and method for converting refuse to thermal energy, metal, and slag devoid of particulate matter. The refuse is injected into an ignition chamber to ignite readily burnable material. The unburnable material is past to a primary chamber wherein it is exposed to a molten metal bath and to pure oxygen to reduce the unburnable material to metal and slag. Water in the refuse reacts with carbon to produce hydrogen gas. This gas is passed to a secondary chamber wherein the hydrogen is burnt, resulting in an increase in temperature to above 3000.degree. F. and producing water. Because of this high temperature the water disassociates into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen burns repeatedly and forms water and hydrogen in rapid succession generating thermal energy devoid of particulate material. The method and apparatus are also suitable for burning coal instead of refuse.

摘要: An apparatus for producing ignitable solids-gas suspensions has a feeder for vertically feeding the solids-primary gas suspension, a secondary gas passage concentrically surrounding said feeder, and a stage for mixing both streams. In order to improve the igniting and melting of solids-gas suspensions in such apparatus, the feeder for the solids-primary gas suspension consists of a pressure relief vessel, which is provided with a tangentially extending supply line for supplying the solids-primary gas suspension, which supply line opens into said vessel in a substantially horizontal direction, and in that the pressure relief vessel is succeeded by two series-connected mixing stages which consist of venturi diffusers, the secondary gas passage concentrically surrounds the diffuser in the first mixing stage and the second mixing stage contains a flame-sustaining annular gas burner having fuel gas and oxygen nozzles arranged in alternation and surrounding the diffuser outlet, which is provided with a cooling chamber. The entire burner apparatus is mounted on the top rim of a vertical combustion shaft, which opens into a horizontal melting cyclone chamber.
