An opto-electronic apparatus for sensing the position or inspecting the condition of a target, which is capable of at least partially reflecting light in a scattered manner, includes an incident light source and means to direct light from the source in a narrow incident beam onto the target along an incident beam axis. A photoelectric sensor, which includes light collecting and focusing means as well as photosensitive means for receiving the focused light, provides for collecting and focusing the reflected scattered light along a reflected light axis of the light collecting and focusing means to the photosensitive means which provides an output signal including a portion which is a function of displacement of the focused light from a reference of the photosensitive means. Such reference represents the position of the axis intersection between the incident beam axis and the reflected light axis of the light collecting and focusing means. Also included in the apparatus is sensing means responsive to the output signal of the photosensitive means to sense displacement of the target, along the incident beam axis, in respect to the axis intersection.

A process for highspeed branding of an intricate pattern, usually a wood grain pattern, into materials such as particle board, hard board or various lumbers having poor grain characteristics is disclosed. The material to be branded is passed under a heated rotary die having the desired pattern thereon to emboss by heat shrinking and to char the pattern into the material; and the improvement of the process of the present invention, which effects an increased die life, is comprised of maintaining the die at about a temperature between about 800.degree. and about 900.degree. F. This temperature range is high enough to achieve high quality branding and high quantity production, while minimizing degradation of the die pattern from oxidation and contact with the material being branded. The die pattern is preferably relatively deep, in excess of 0.040 inch, and is urged into the material to a depth of about one-half the pattern depth.

Apparatus for branding dater or other indicia into predetermined areas of liquid food products containers, such as the top ribs of milk cartons, includes an anvil member adapted to be attached to a movable rib compression jaw of a carton filling and sealing apparatus, and a heated dater block mounting date-applying structure, the block being mounted on the apparatus such that the date-applying structure is aligned with the anvil. The anvil and dater block comprise a dating station which is adjacent the compression station of the apparatus and so close to the compression station that the conveyor of the apparatus positively indexes cartons toward and away from the dating station. When the movable compression jaw moves toward a carton rib to compress it against the other jaw, the dater anvil is thereby moved toward the rib of a downstream carton to press it against the heated date-applying structure and a date is branded into the rib. Thereafter, the carton conveyor engages and moves a compressed carton toward the dating station and engages and moves a dated carton away from the dating station. The dater requires no driving mechanism nor other dater element actuating devices of its own, but rather derives its movement from the movement of carton treating or closure-forming apparatus of the filling and sealing apparatus with which the dater is associated. Further, cartons are positively indexed to and away from the dater and double dating single cartons is eliminated without requiring additional mechanism in the dater unit.

A device for branding data onto an article which fundamentally comprises a stationary heater and die assembly operatively opposed to a reciprocating hammer assembly. Actuation of the hammer forces the article into branding engagement with the heated die. The die is readily removable from the structure of the invention and provides for easy changing thereof while the heater assembly itself is readily removable from the structure for cleaning, storage or service.

The surface of an article, such as a glass envelope for an electric lamp, is provided with a decorative pattern or indicia by coating the article with a vitreous material that includes a substance (such as lead oxide) that undergoes a permanent change in color when heated under reducing conditions, subjecting the article to a laser beam and a reducing gas flame, and varying the position of the article relative to the beam at a speed and in a manner such that the beam scans the article and thereby melts preselected portions of the vitreous coating and changes the color of such portions. In the case of a vitreous or ceramic article that is susceptible to thermally-induced fracturing, the vitreous coating material is preferably deposited on the article in the form of a frit and the article is preheated to a temperature which is near or above its strain point, thus fusing the frit in place just before the glazed heated article is exposed to the reducing environment and laser beam. An apparatus and method for concurrently firing a glass frit on an article and color-etching the resulting glazed article with a laser having control means which includes a prototype article are also disclosed.
