The liquids are mixed over a period of days onto the solids to generate CO2 in the vicinity of an insect/arthropod trap having glue boards that trap the insects and arthropods when they alight on the glue board. The attractants can be used with devices that utilize various combinations of other insect attractants and traps such as sound, light, scent, visual, electrical, chemical, sticky surfaces, mesh nets, etc., to further attract and trap or kill insects and/or arthropods.

Compositions and methods for attracting, capturing and killing populations of cotton boll weevils (Anthonomus grandis Boh.) in boll weevil traps are disclosed. With respect to the attraction and capture of boll weevils with Grandlure, the synthetic pheromone of the cotton boll weevil, there is generally an increased number of boll weevils captured in the trap cylinder when an insecticide dispenser is included in the trap cylinder to kill the weevils and thus prevent their escape. Additionally, dead boll weevils are more accurately counted than live boll weevils. The compound dichlorvos (2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate or DDVP) is the most preferred among those few insecticides that can be used in traps for killing and preventing weevil escapes. This is also the preferred insecticide when combined with Grandlure in a single dispenser to kill boll weevils or inhibit their ability to develop normally and reproduce. The single Grandlure dichlorvos dispenser provides for significant savings in labor expenses in large area trapping and eradication programs and significantly reduces the disposal of waste materials from spent dispensers.

The insect attractant creates an attractive smell, taste or other olfactory sensation that elicits an attractive response in the insect. The flying insect moves toward the fan mechanism against the flow of attractant-laden air, in order to reach the source of the attractant. The flying insect enters the trap, toward the source of the smell, which is the fan. The entrance to the trap leads into a bag, into which the insect moves to find the source of the attractant, and is trapped within the bag. The user may easily remove the bag from the interior of the trap, and dispose of the bag in a refuse receptacle. A new bag is then placed in the interior of the insect trap, and the trap is ready to trap more insects.

A method and apparatus provide for the killing of insects by trapping the larvae, which either prevents development into adults or traps the adults developed from the larvae to prevent further reproduction and harm. In one preferred embodiment, the apparatus includes a container with an inverted cone or other protrusion and a second non-horizontal surface, such as a funnel, positioned above the inverted cone. The funnel defines an opening above the inverted cone. A barrier may also be included that abuts the underside of the funnel. A liquid such as water is placed in the container at a level at least above the opening such that eggs laid in the water become larvae that swim downward and are directed through the opening by the funnel and are directed away from the opening by the inverted cone. The larvae either drown, if the water level is above the barrier, or else become trapped adult mosquitoes that cannot escape from the container. After eggs are deposited in the development cycle of the egg, the larva, pupa, adult life stage are interrupted by denying the proper environment to sustain their development. Also disclosed is an apparatus to abate mosquito populations which provides a convenient and attractive reservoir of liquid situated to encourage use by mosquitoes for egg laying. At intervals the liquid in the reservoir is flushed or filtered eliminating mosquito biomass developing in the liquid. The bio-matter is substantially removed and aborts the development of the bio-matter into adult insects.

A fly trap includes a cylindrical side wall made of a mesh material; a bottom wall located proximate (i.e., nullat or nearnull) the bottom end of the side wail; a top wall located proximate the top end of the side wall; a conical entry conduit extending from proximate the bottom wall and providing an entry path to the interior chamber of the fly trap; and a lure holding device for holding a fly lure composition beneath the bottom opening of the entry conduit. The entry conduit may include an extending flange member that forms at least a portion of the bottom wall of the trap. Preferably, the top wall and/or some other part of the fly trap includes a light reflecting device, such as a prism or reflector, to help attract attention to the trap in the daylight. Also, to help attract attention to the trap at night, one or more surfaces may be coated with or constructed from a material that glows in the dark (e.g. a powder containing a commercially available phosphorescent material). The lure holding device may contain a suitable fly lure composition, such as one containing about 0.5-3% dried animal blood, wherein the dried animal blood is dried in such a manner that proteins contained therein are not denatured and amino acids contained therein remain intact, and about 0.1-5% sweet brewer's yeast (all percentages are weight percentages based on the entire weight of the composition).
