Abstract: Techniques for supporting positioning for a terminal (sometimes referred to herein as a target device) in a wireless network are described. In an aspect, positioning for a target device includes receiving a Request Location Information message, for a server, that includes a first information element and a second information element, wherein the first information element includes at least one field that is common to multiple positioning methods and wherein the at least one field comprises a quality-of-service (QoS), an indication of whether periodic location information is requested, an indication of whether triggered location information is requested, or any combination thereof, wherein the second information element includes at least one field that is specific to a first positioning method, and performing positioning in response to the Request Location Information message.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) periodically obtains its location using UE based Observed Time Difference of Arrival (OTDOA). The location is based on Reference Signal Time Differences (RSTDs) measured by the UE for downlink (DL) signals transmitted by each of a plurality of base stations, and the most current Real Time Differences (RTDs) for pairs of base stations. The RTDs may be determined by the UE using the RSTD measurements and Round Trip Time (RTT) measurements determined by a network entity or by the UE. The RTDs may be determined less frequently than the UE location to reduce network and UE load. Location of the UE may be improved based on testing a rate of change for each of the RTDs. The RTD determination may be improved using measurements from a plurality of UEs.

Abstract: Techniques are discussed herein for supporting periodic or triggered location of a user equipment (UE) using Early Data Transmission (EDT). A location server (LS), such as a 5G LMF, sends a request to a UE for periodic or triggered location and includes a request and/or criteria for using EDT. After confirming the request, the UE monitors for periodic or triggering events and, for each detected event, sends an event report to the LS which may include location information. In embodiments, the UE establishes a signaling connection with a RAN node but not with a core network to send the event report using EDT. The RAN node may then release the signaling connection, either immediately or after the LS returns a single response to the UE.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for determining a location of a user equipment (UE) communicating over a shared communication medium in unlicensed spectrum. In an aspect, the UE receives a unique or distinct positioning reference signal (PRS) configuration for each of a plurality of secondary cells, where each PRS configuration includes a common set of positioning occasions and where the plurality of secondary cells are in contention for the common set of positioning occasions. The UE attempts to measure a PRS for each of the PRS configurations in each positioning occasion and typically measures a PRS for just one PRS configuration in each positioning occasion due to the contention for positioning occasions. The UE reports the PRS measurements and the identities of the measured PRS configurations to a location server which uses the reported data to determine a location for the UE.

Abstract: Mobile devices often use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to calculate position information of mobile devices within the network. However, physical distance between the mobile device and a signal source for positioning and other environmental factors can influence the signal strength of received signals. Received signals at the mobile device that are stronger may drown out the weaker signals, particularly when two signal sources occupy the same symbol. In traditional OFDM, a signal source transmits the same symbol for each positioning occasion, so a weaker signal may never be detected over a stronger signal, reducing the accuracy of the positioning calculations. Described herein are systems and methods for using a pattern to vary the designated symbol for each signal source in a wireless network so that a weaker signal from a signal source may be detected on at least some of the positioning occasions.

Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, and computer-readable media are described. In one example, a method, on a base station, for providing position measurements signals in a wireless communication network, comprises: determining a plurality of subcarriers for downlink transmission, wherein the plurality of subcarriers for downlink transmission comprise all subcarriers indicated in a resource block of a scheduled time of transmission within a scheduled transmission occasion, wherein the resource block comprises a plurality of symbol periods, wherein each symbol period of the plurality of symbol periods is for transmission of a symbol using one or more subcarriers of the plurality of subcarriers; and transmitting at the scheduled time of transmission, and using each subcarrier of the plurality of subcarriers, a wireless position measurement signal at the scheduled transmission occasion, the wireless position measurement signal being part of a sequence of wireless signals representing a position measurement signal bitstream.

Abstract: Techniques are discussed herein for efficiently supporting broadcast of location assistance data (AD) in a wireless network to assist in locating a user equipment (UE). A location server (LS) may send some location AD, which may be optionally ciphered, to base stations for broadcast in cells supported by the base stations. Capability information provided by a UE to the LS indicating a level of support by the UE for receiving broadcast AD and supporting ciphering may enable the LS to determine whether, and what type of, additional AD needs to be sent to the UE by point to point means. An LS may use capability information received from a large number of UEs to assist in determining the types of location assistance data to be broadcast and usage of ciphering.
