Abstract: Techniques are described for wireless communication. A method of wireless communication at a first wireless device includes identifying a template mapping of a plurality of ports to a first plurality of frequency subcarriers and a first plurality of time periods of a template time-frequency resource grid; mapping a plurality of resource elements of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) time-frequency resource grid to the plurality of ports based at least in part on the template mapping; receiving a reference signal from a second wireless device, on a subset of the plurality of ports, based at least in part on the mapping; and decoding the reference signal from a subset of the plurality of resource elements based at least in part on the mapping. In some cases, each port of the plurality of ports is associated with a corresponding radio frequency (RF) chain.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A wireless device, such as a user equipment and/or a base station, may determine that an active transmit beam has changed from a first transmit beam to a second transmit beam, the second transmit beam being different from the first transmit beam. The wireless device may identify a reference signal identifier that is associated with the second transmit beam. The wireless device may update, based at least in part on the identifying, a channel state information (CSI) resource setting to include the reference signal identifier, wherein the CSI resource setting is associated with the active transmit beam.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station may identify a sounding reference signal (SRS) configuration for user equipment (UE). The base station may transmit an SRS grant message to a UE indicating the SRS configuration. An indication of SRS parameters may be included in the SRS grant message, and may include the SRS parameters or a location of the SRS parameters. That is, SRS parameters may be transmitted in a control channel with the SRS grant message or may be separately sent in a data channel as indicated by the indication of SRS parameters. In some cases, SRS parameters may be determined based on previously received UE feedback regarding channel conditions or power limitations. Alternatively, the base station may make its own environment measurements or assign SRS parameters autonomously. The UE may signal SRS transmissions to the base station according to the SRS grant message.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) may transmit a random access message to a wireless node using multiple symbols. The random access message may include repetitions of a random access sequence weighted by a spreading code. For example, a random access sequence may be weighted using different elements of the spreading code, where a first repetition may be weighted with a first element and a second repetition may be weighted using a second element. The weighted random access signals may be spread over multiple symbols and transmitted to the wireless node as the random access message. In some cases, a spreading code may include values of one and negative one, may be based on rows of a Hadamard matrix, or may correspond to a number of symbols used to transmit the random access message.

Abstract: When a first node is subject to a maximum permissible exposure (MPE) condition, it may be beneficial for the first node to signal, to a second node, an uplink beam to be used for communications and/or one or more properties of the uplink beam. For example, the first node may signal a downlink beam, from a first reciprocal beam pair, and an uplink beam, from a second reciprocal beam pair, to be used for communications, and/or may signal one or more properties of the uplink beam and/or the downlink beam. Additionally, or alternatively, the second node may transmit, to the first node, a signaling state (e.g., a transmission configuration indication (TCI) state) that indicates properties to be used to configure an uplink beam and/or a downlink beam. In this way, the first node and the second node may configure beams in a manner that accounts for MPE limitations.

Abstract: High frequency wireless communication networks rely on directional transmit and receive beams to achieve large gains and overcome large pathlosses associated with high frequency signals. With highly directional signals, link failure may occur. Network nodes associated with the link failure, may need to identify new beam pairs and establish a new link as quickly as possible. In several aspects, beam sweep procedures are expedited, allowing for rapid link reestablishment. Disclosed techniques allow for rapid link reestablishment with and without beam correspondence.

Abstract: When beamforming (e.g., via a millimeter wave system (mmW)) is used for wireless communication, a base station may transmit beams that are directed to certain directions. Due to the directional nature of the beams in the mmW system, an approach to determine a beam that provides a desirable gain is studied. The apparatus may be a user equipment (UE). The apparatus receives, from a base station, a plurality of signals through a plurality of beams of the base station, each of the plurality of beams corresponding to a respective antenna port of a plurality of antenna ports of the base station. The apparatus performs channel estimation for each beam of the plurality of beams from the plurality of antenna ports based on the plurality of signals. The apparatus transmits, to the base station, a feedback signal including information about one or more beams selected from the plurality of beams, the feedback signal further including one or more candidate uplink precoders.

Abstract: Techniques are described for wireless communication. In one method, a user equipment (UE) receives a timing synchronization signal (TSS) and a physical broadcast channel (PBCH), with the TSS based at least in part on a timing of the TSS within a broadcast channel transmission time interval (BCH TTI); determines the timing of the TSS within the BCH TTI; and demodulates the PBCH based at least in part on the TSS. In another method, a base station allocates resources for a TSS and a PBCH within a BCH TTI; determines the TSS based at least in part on a timing of the TSS within the BCH TTI; and transmits, on the resources allocated for the TSS and the PBCH, the TSS and the PBCH, with the TSS transmitted as a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) for the PBCH on at least one port used to transmit the TSS and the PBCH.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. Beams used for synchronization signals may be associated with beams used for reference signals. For example, a base station may identify a first set of millimeter wave (mmW) communication beams to transmit a synchronization signal. The base station may transmit the synchronization signal and identify a second set of mmW communication beams to transmit a reference signal, where the second set of mmW communication beams may be associated with the first set of beams. For instance, the first set and second set of mmW communication beams may be the same or similar. The base station may then transmit the reference signal on the second set of mmW communication beams. A user equipment may in turn identify the first and second sets of beams as being associated, and receive the reference signal on the second set of mmW communication beams.
