    Abstract: An optical device includes an optical modulator formed on an optical IC chip. A shape of the IC chip is a rectangle or a parallelogram. The optical modulator includes an interferometer, wiring patterns, a first polymer pattern, and a second polymer pattern. The interferometer includes an optical waveguide that is formed in a direction from a first edge to a second edge of the optical IC chip. The wiring patterns are formed parallel to the optical waveguide. The first polymer pattern is formed along the first edge or the second edge. The second polymer pattern is connected to the first polymer pattern and formed on the optical waveguide without overlapping the wiring patterns.

    Abstract: An optical device is formed on an optical IC chip. The shape of the optical IC chip is rectangular or parallelogram. The optical device induces: an optical device circuit; a first optical waveguide that is coupled to the optical device circuit; a pad that is electrically connected to the optical device circuit; a grating coupler; and a second optical waveguide that is coupled to the grating coupler. The pad is formed in a region close to a first side of the optical IC chip. The grating coupler is formed in a specified region, which is not close to the first side, on the optical IC chip. The first optical waveguide and the second optical waveguide are respectively extended to an edge of the optical IC chip.

    Abstract: A tunable light source includes a substrate; a light source; a wavelength selecting device that selects, according to a control signal, output light with a specific wavelength from light output from the light source; a wavelength filter that is disposed on the substrate, filters the output light, and outputs the filtered light; a light-receiving device that receives the filtered light from the wavelength filter; and a controller configured to generate the control signal based on an output transmittance corresponding to a quantity of the received light received by the light-receiving device, a first transmittance corresponding to a target wavelength, a second transmittance corresponding to a shorter-wavelength limit of a control range including the target wavelength, and a third transmittance corresponding to a longer-wavelength limit of the control range, and output the generated control signal to the wavelength selecting device.

    Abstract: A tunable optical source includes a substrate, a light source disposed on the substrate, and a wavelength selecting element configured to select light of a specific wavelength as output light, from light emitted from the light source, in accordance with a control signal. On the substrate, a wavelength filter including multiple output ports and a photodetector are disposed. The wavelength filter is configured to receive a part of the output light and to output light beams to the respective output ports. The photodetector is configured to receive the light beam output from one of the output ports. The tunable optical source further includes an inspection waveguide connecting to the photodetector at one end, and an inspection light input unit for inputting inspection light provided at the other end of the inspection waveguide.

    Abstract: An optical device includes an optical waveguide that includes an incident waveguide, parallel waveguides along an electrode, and emission waveguides, formed on a substrate having an electro-optical effect, a first emission waveguide among the emission waveguides is set as an output waveguide of signal light, for output to an external destination and a second emission waveguide among the emission waveguides is set as a monitoring optical waveguide for the signal light; a photodetector that is disposed over the monitoring optical waveguide; and a groove formed on a portion of the substrate, where the photodetector of the monitoring optical waveguide is disposed. The monitoring optical waveguide has a width that, as compared with the width at a starting point side, is formed to increase as the monitoring optical waveguide approaches the groove.
