    Abstract: A self-tapping, blind setting bolt rivet assembly capable of permanently fastening one or more sheet metal work pieces or the like together while also providing a hollow cylindrical threaded bolt head onto which a nut may be affixed to a means to removably attach other work pieces, components or the like. The rivet assembly comprises a rivet body having a hollow tubular sleeve and a threaded stud separated by an enlarged flattened head. The rivet body surrounds a mandrel comprising a shank which is terminated in a screw tip. This screw tip punctures, spreads, and self-taps an aperture in the work pieces through which the rivet sleeve passes. The mandrel's shank may have a weakened area of reduced diameter adjacent to the screw tip which allows detachment of shaft following application of sufficient axial force to the shank. This application of force sets the rivet by causing a tapered shoulder section of the mandrel to deform the rivet sleeve. The rivet assembly may further comprise a locking washer to prevent rotation of the rivet body when the nut is tightened on the threaded stud. A process for applying the bolt rivet assembly using an adapter is also disclosed.

    Abstract: Two components are connected to each other by least one screw and held a certain distance apart from each other by a spacer which is provided with a slot for the passage of the screw. A first component has a hole which is larger than the shaft of the screw, this hole being covered by a washer borne against by the head of the screw. Slots provided in the washer and in the spacer permit not only a two-dimensional change of position of the first component with respect to the shaft of the screw but also a two-dimensional change of position of the washer and the spacer with respect to the shaft of the screw. When the components are being aligned, the washer and the spacer can be rotated by means of fingers extending from the spacer and through holes in the washer in such a way that the washer and the spacer continue to be concentric to the central axis of the hole in the first component. When the screw is tightened, optimum transmission of force is achieved from the washer to the first component and from the first component to the spacer.

    Abstract: A combination of a plastic part and metal part functions as a fastener to attach a panel to the flange of a portion of a chassis for electronic equipment or the like. The panel is formed with a counterbored hole and has an arcuate groove outside the counterbore on the outside of the panel and angularly spaced dimples on the underside. The fastener is a peripherally flanged hollow cylindrical member fitting into the hole and counterbore. It has a partially closed bottom and opposed openings in the cylindrical walls. A detent slants upward-outward from the bottom through one of the openings. A metal clip attaches to the cap, having an inverted U-shape having a web and two depending sides which fit through the openings. The top has a shoulder which locks outside the detent to hold the parts assembled and has a locking extension beyond the shoulder. One of the sides has an arcuate arm approximately in the plane of the top having a dimple which engages the dimples on the underside of the panel to hold the fastener in positions of adjustment. The cap has a transverse partition with its bore formed with a screwdriver slot aligned with an enlarged similar slot in the top of the clip. Thus the fastener may be turned to a position where the projection of the top of the clip engages under the flange of the chassis.
