摘要: A beam shaping assembly for neutron capture therapy includes a beam inlet, a target having nuclear reaction with an incident proton beam from the beam inlet to produce neutrons forming a neutron beam defining a main axis, a moderator adjoining to the target, a reflector surrounding the moderator, a thermal neutron absorber adjoining to the moderator, a radiation shield arranged inside the beam shaping assembly and a beam outlet. The neutrons are moderated to epithermal neutron energies. The reflector leads the neutrons deviated from the main axis back, and a gap channel is arranged between the moderator and the reflector. The thermal neutron absorber is used for absorbing thermal neutrons so as to avoid overdosing in superficial normal tissue during therapy. The radiation shield is used for shielding leaking neutrons and photons so as to reduce dose of the normal tissue not exposed to irradiation.

摘要: A degrader for use in the field of the application of a particle beam has excellent degrading capabilities and, for the same energy loss in the degrader, a lower emittance increase than currently used materials, without generating a strong neutron flux and without having severe toxic characteristics. The degrader includes degrading active material composed of Boron Carbide B4C. The degrader has an amount of multiple scattering that is lower than for graphite for the same energy loss. The use of B4C increases the transmission by typically 35% for the beam degradation to low energies, which is a significant and useful amount of beam intensity increase in particle therapy. The B4C material does not become more radioactive than graphite, so that there will be no additional problems at service activities. Further, B4C when used as a degrading active material does not have severe toxic properties.

摘要: The invention relates to a method for processing energy spectra of a radiation transmitted by an object irradiated by a source of ionizing radiations, in particular an X radiation, for applications in medical imaging or non-destructive inspection. The method implements a detector comprising a plurality of pixels, each pixel being able to establish a spectrum of the radiation transmitted by the object. The method makes it possible, from a plurality of spectra detected, to establish so-called corrected spectra. Each corrected spectrum is an estimation of the spectrum of a radiation, called primary radiation, transmitted by the object. The invention makes it possible to reduce the influence of the scattering, by the object, of the spectrum emitted by the source.

摘要: In a beam filter assembly, a base filter is employed to modify a beam quality of a radiation beam of a base energy level and a first filter slice is stacked with the base filter to modify a beam quality of a radiation beam of a first energy level higher than the base energy level. In a beam filter positioning device, a base stage carries a base filter and a first stage carries a filter slice. The base stage is provided with a first engagement site and a second engagement site. The first stage is provided with a first engagement site, a second engagement site, and an open port. The first stage and the base stage are each independently movable relative to the beamline. The first stage is engageable with the base stage when at least one of the first and second engagement sites of the first stage is aligned with at least one of the first and second engagement sites of the base stage, and is further movable with the base stage in unison when engaged.

摘要: A beam shaping device included in a beam transport system is provided with: a pre-stage quadrupole electromagnet that reduces a distribution width of x-angle components that are inclinations in the x-direction of the charged particles in the beam with respect to the traveling direction; a penumbra expander that moderates an end profile of a particle-number distribution of the x-angle components in the beam having passed through the pre-stage quadrupole electromagnet; and a post-stage quadrupole electromagnet that adjusts a betatron phase in a phase-space distribution in the x-direction, of the beam having passed through the penumbra expander; wherein the post-stage quadrupole electromagnet adjusts a phase advance angle of the betatron phase from the penumbra expander to the isocenter, to be in a range of an odd multiple of 90 degrees±45 degrees.

摘要: Systems and methods are provided for scanning an item utilizing an X-ray scanner in order to facilitate a determination of whether the X-ray radiation penetrated through the entirety of the scanned item. Various embodiments comprise a conveying mechanism, an X-ray emitter, a detector, and an X-ray penetration grid (XPG). The XPG may comprise a radiopaque grid that may serve as a reference for determining whether radiation passes through the scanned item, the grid oriented such that the grid members are neither parallel nor perpendicular to the direction of travel. Such orientation may minimize or eliminate “ghosted” radiation signals included in a visual display of the radiation received by the detector. A scanned item may be oriented with the XPG such that radiation emitted by the X-ray emitter that passes through a portion of the scanned item must also pass through the XPG before being received by the detector.

The first plate may include an x-ray absorbing material and walls defining first slits. The first slits may include arc shaped openings through the first plate. The walls of the first plate may be configured to absorb at least some of first x-rays when the first x-rays are incident on the x-ray absorbing material, and to output second x-rays. The filters may comprise a second plate spaced from the first plate. The second plate may include the x-ray absorbing material and walls defining second slits. The second slits may include arc shaped openings through the second plate. The walls of the second plate may be configured to absorb at least some of second x-rays and to output third x-rays.
