This invention relates to a railway vehicle continual quick service valve device that embodies two abutments normally subject on their respective opposite sides of the pressure in a train brake pipe and in a control chamber. Upon a reduction of brake pipe pressure on one side of these abutments, one abutment operates a valve to release fluid under pressure from the brake pipe and the brake pipe side of the other abutment to atmosphere whereupon this other abutment operates a valve that releases fluid under pressure from the control chamber and the control chamber side of both abutments to atmosphere. These abutments then operate their respective valves to cut off venting of fluid under pressure from the brake pipe and the control chamber to atmosphere. If the reduction of brake pipe pressure on the one side of the one abutment continues, the abovedescribed cycle reoccurs so long as fluid under pressure is released from the brake pipe.

A brake control valve device for a railway vehicle having a service valve piston assembly subject to a pressure differential between the brake pipe and a single reservoir acting on a first piston and to brake cylinder delivery pressure acting on a second piston of the assembly. A brake pipe reduction actuates the service valve assembly, toward service application position, in which position, the single reservoir pressure is connected to a pilot chamber of a brake cylinder exhaust control valve for actuating a brake cylinder exhaust valve to its closed position, while concurrently, connecting the single reservoir pressure to the car brake cylinders. Pressure limiting means is provided to assure that sufficient pressure remains in the single reservoir following a full service or overreduction application for the purpose of providing additional braking pressure during an emergency brake application.In the event the brake pipe reduction is only due to a pressure transient of short term duration, the service valve assembly is capable of dissipating sufficient reservoir pressure to counteract such brake pipe transient and accordingly prevent its movement to service application position.

A fluid brake control system is disclosed having an improved emergency application and stability control device for use in association with a brake control pipe, emergency and auxiliary fluid reservoirs, a first quick action chamber, a brake cylinder, and emergency and service control valves. An improved emergency application and stability control valve is provided comprising a housing containing a differential abutment subject to actuation axially by differences in fluid pressures in respective brake pipe pressure and quick action control pressure chambers on opposite sides of the abutment. The control device has at least one ball poppet type valve on each side of the abutment that is spring biased toward a closed position and has an operating push rod longitudinally disposed between the associated valve and the abutment. The poppet valve on one side of the abutment is opened by movement of the abutment in one direction for permitting application of fluid from the emergency reservoir to the brake cylinder. The poppet valve on the other side of the abutment is opened by movement of the abutment in the opposite direction to permit charging of the first quick action chamber at a controlled rate from the brake pipe. A stabilizing spring is provided in the brake pipe pressure chamber biasing the abutment normally in a direction to close the poppet valve on said one side of the abutment and to open the poppet valve on the other side of the abutment.

An emergency piston disposed within the quick service volume cooperates with the diaphragm valve in response to an emergency rate of reduction of the pressure in the brake pipe to effect operation of a brake pipe vent valve and a poppet-type valve that effects the supply of fluid under pressure from an emergency reservoir to a brake cylinder jointly with the supply from an auxiliary reservoir to cause an emergency brake application.

A service brake accelerator valve is actuated by the auxiliary piston in response to a variation of pressure in the brake line during a service braking operation when the main piston is in an inactive position.

A bracking system for tractor-trailer combinations wherein the air delivery time to the trailer brakes is substantially reduced. A boost-air assembly having its own air supply is mounted at the forward end of the air delivery system. The assembly includes a fast-acting amplifying relay valve, a closely-coupled air tank and a bracket for mounting the valve and the tank. In the prime embodiment, the assembly is mounted on the tractor proximate the rear thereof to significantly reduce the time required to transmit a control pressure to the trailer brake actuators because (1) less time is required for the control pressure to reach the amplifying valve, (2) the fast response time of the valve, (3) the amplification achieved by the valve and (4) the proximity of the closely-coupled auxiliary air tank. Alternate mounting loctions are also taught for mounting one or more boost-air assemblies for even further lessening air delivery time to the trailer brakes.
