    Abstract: A two-row crop harvester for carrots, beets, etc. has a wheeled chassis with a forward cab disposed to one side of a pair of lifter frame assemblies. Each lifter frame assembly has a main component with a forwardly gathering element rigidly connected to a rearward mounting element. The rear end of the mounting element is pivotally mounted on a rocking frame, the lower end of which is pivoted about a horizontal axis on the main frame of the harvester. The main component of each lifter frame assembly mounts a relatively movable gathering component. The topping bar units have both their driven and idler ends supported by the main component of the lifter frame assembly. The rear drive pulleys for the gathering belts are chain driven from the drive shafts of the topping units and the latter are individually driven by hydraulic motors and articulated shafts with the motors geared together so that the topping bar units are synchronized.

    Abstract: A novel beet harvesting machine is disclosed having a rectangular frame with a front yoke and longitudinal and transverse support beams and being pulled by a tractor at the yoke for harvesting and delivering beets into a truck. The beet harvesting machine of the present invention utilizes hydraulic motors for powering the flailing of the dug beets rearwardly into the machine, the conveying of the flailed beets further rearwardly in the machine, the delivering of the beets laterally and the elevating of the beets upwardly and into the truck. The reservoir for the hydraulic fluid is integral with and disposed in the center of one of the longitudinal and transverse beams. A pump is provided for delivering the fluid from the reservoir and into the hydraulic motors of the present invention. A cooler for dissipating heat in the fluid is further provided.

    Abstract: A lightweight harvester for a vine crop such as tomatoes planted in spaced-apart parallel rows on seed beds separated by depressed furrows. The harvester has a frame mounted on aligned, longitudinally spaced-apart flotation wheels which are positioned so that they ride on top of the seed bed during harvesting operations. The frame mounts vine pickup, handling and fruit separating mechanisms and includes a knife, aligned with the flotation wheels, for severing the vines from their roots forward of the wheels so that the wheels ride over a relatively smooth seed bed. An outrigger is secured to the frame, extends laterally therefrom and at its outer end mounts a stabilizing wheel which is spaced from the flotation wheels so that it rides in a furrow during harvesting operations. The axis of the stabilizing wheel can be raised or lowered to maintain the harvester in a laterally horizontal inclination when the ground slopes transversely to the seed beds. The outrigger is removable and the frame and equipment mounted thereon have an overall cross-section of no more than about 7 foot in height and width so that the harvester can be placed inside standard 8 foot by 8 foot shipping containers for shipment and ocean transportation.

    Abstract: A separator for mechanical harvesters of the type where the fruit or other heavy part of the crop is separated from the remainder of the plant by a shaking action. A generally rectangular frame has a front end where harvested plants are introduced and a rear end where they leave. A rockshaft supports the front end of the frame for substantially pure fore-and-aft movement, while crank means support the rear end of the frame and drive it as a unit in a generally circular motion involving both vertical and fore-and-aft components. There is a plurality of pulleys at each end of the frame, those on the rear end being mounted on the crank pin and driven by the crank means, those on the front end being idlers individually spring mounted. The pulleys cany a plurality of closed-loop belts with upwardly extending projections for engaging harvesting plants and moving them from the front to the rear of the frame. A collecting conveyor beneath the frame catches the fruit shaken from said plant and conveys it elsewhere. Thus, the more easily loosened fruit is shaken off by fore-and-aft shaking while the fruit more difficult to loosen is shaken off by the gradual introduction of vertical movement as the crop moves rearwardly. The belt, pulleys, and belt guides are also novel in structure.
