摘要: The invention includes a method of winding thin glass tubing or the like on a drum by blowing air against the end turn. This packs the turns tightly together. It has not heretofore been possible to do so because of the very thin and tenuous character of the tubing. The tubing is cut from the drum, laminated, bonded, and sliced perpendicular to the tubing axes. The result is a perforate wafer which may be used as a channel-type electron multiplier when a type of glass tubing is used which will produce a secondary emission ratio greater than unity from the interior surface of the tubing.

摘要: A method and apparatus for reducing the tension of continuous glass fiber strand is disclosed. The apparatus is composed of a traveling surface rotating about an axis. The surface has a plurality of tracks of variable lengths running oblique to the axis of rotation of the surface. The termination point of the track on the traveling surface is also the point of origin of a subsequent track, thus a continuous irregular path is defined by the tracks. The tracks are determined by a plurality of contact points on which the glass fiber strand engages. The surface travels at a slightly greater linear speed than the take-up winder thus reducing the tension of the strand on the glass fiber strand package. Additionally, the surface may be reciprocally traversed the length of the take-up package or alternatively the take-up package can be traversed to obtain a random wind of glass fiber strand.

摘要: A rotatable mandrel for holding a tube on which a glass strand is wound into a package which has elongated fingers extending lengthwise of the mandrel in closely adjoining relation, said fingers being loosely held for outward movement under the centrifugal force of the rotation of the mandrel whereby the tube is held to its greatest diameter, each of said fingers having a groove along its longitudinal center line and tapered edges whereby on termination of the rotating movement of the mandrel and of the associated application of centrifugal force against the tube, the tube is constricted by the tension of the wound strand thereon and to effect an accommodating reduction in diameter, portions of the tube collapse and enter into the depressed areas of the center grooves and tapered edges of the fingers.

摘要: Producing bundles of optical fiber my winding successive layers of the fiber in the same direction on winding apparatus. The apparatus includes a winding drum over which the fiber is wound in one spiral direction. A guide roller controls the direction and pitch of spiral winding and a transfer plate picks up and returns the fiber to the same starting position on the drum for the winding of each layer thereof. The transfer plate assumes a position of rest during the winding of each layer of fiber and a magnetic clutch is actuated upon completion of the winding causing the transfer plate to rotate with the drum for picking up and returning the fiber to the starting position. At the starting position, the clutch is released and the transfer plate returns to its position of rest by inertia, breaking the length of fiber carried thereover away from the fiber windings on the drum.
