摘要: Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, implementing techniques for reader-specific display of text. The techniques include receiving digital text data comprising base text and annotation text, receiving as input user information about a reader, customizing digital text data according to the user information about the reader, and displaying the customized digital text data. The annotation text includes one or more annotation text elements. The base text includes one or more base text elements. The digital text data associates each annotation text element with a base text element. The user information can include the reader's reading level and reading preferences. Customizing digital text data according to the user information about the reader includes mapping the user's reading level to one of a plurality of character difficulty tables that group the base text elements according to their difficulty level, each character difficulty table corresponding to a particular reading level.

摘要: The present invention relates to systems and methods for enhancing the holistic and temporal speech perception processes of a learning-impaired subject. A subject listens to a sound stimulus which induces the perception of verbal transformations. The subject records the verbal transformations which are then used to create further sound stimuli in the form of semantic-like phrases and an imaginary story. Exposure to the sound stimuli enhances holistic speech perception of the subject with cross-modal benefits to speech production, reading and writing. The present invention has application to a wide range of impairments including, Specific Language Impairment, language learning disabilities, dyslexia, autism, dementia and Alzheimer's.

摘要: An interactive toy. The toy includes a housing, a pin supported by the housing and a first coloring sheet having a portion alignable with the pin to facilitate conduction of a signal. A second coloring sheet has a portion alignable with the pin to prevent conduction of the signal. The toy also includes a sensor operable to determine if the signal is conducted and a switch having an actuated condition. A controller is operable to output a first output signal when the signal is conducted and the switch is in the actuated condition, and a second output signal when the signal is not conducted and the switch is in the actuated condition. The first coloring sheet is erasable and reusable. The housing includes a marker stand, an eraser holder and a drawer for storing markers and cover sheets.

摘要: A language skills training system supports interactive dialogue in which a spoken user input is recorded into a processing device and then the spoken user input is analyzed for multiple phonetic criteria, wherein at least one of the phonetic criteria comprises intonation, stress, or rhythm. The system includes multiple context-based practice exercises and multiple problem-based exercises, such that each problem-based practice exercise is interactively linked to at least one of the context-based practice exercises, and relates to skills being practiced in the context-based practice exercises to which it is linked. Each of the context-based practice exercise tests user skills that are being taught in the linked problem-based exercises. If user responses indicate that the user would benefit from extra practice in particular types of language skills, then the user will be routed to one or more of the practice problem sets that involve the language skill in which the user is deficient. Upon successful completion of the problem sets, the user is returned to the exercise sequence.

摘要: The present invention comprises a teaching toy that invites a child's interaction using an attractive play figure, for example a stuffed animal, to present more than one instructional modality in mixed formats. The child is presented with a declarative instruction, songs, and moving lights and kinesthetic and reasoning connections are induced in the child's mind via games, songs, and visual stimuli. Particularly, the present invention teaches and reinforces a child's knowledge of geometric shapes, colors, melody and rhythm by use of visual, audial, and kinesthetic involvement of the child. If the inventive is presented in the form of a stuffed animal, the exterior of the animal would have a plurality of indicia that the child could press. The indicia is electrically coupled to switching circuitry and those switches activate a logic circuit containing preprogrammed instruction modalities and play methods. The instruction modalities are communicated using a variety of preprogrammed fun speech patterns so that the toy appears to talk to the child and provide instruction. Each inventive toy presents least two distinct instruction modalities, for example, i) identifying a symbol by its shape and ii) associating a visual stimulus with a kinesthetic action.

摘要: A method of teaching dyslexic persons to read and spell, that initially teaches phonemic awareness before letters are introduced. The system includes video instruction for tutors, fully scripted lesson plans, an electronic spell checker, and a word frame to enable viewing words in isolation and also incorporates small tiles as manipulatives. The tiles are square, roughly one inch on a side, and null-inch thick. The preferred material is wood. Most of the tiles have one or more black letters printed on their top surface. The particular letter, group of letters, or lack of any letter, and the background color of each tile correspond to its function in the learning process.

摘要: A reading structure for improving reading and teaching reading comprehension. The structure includes a tutor performing a first reading act aloud, and a tutee performing a second reading act after hearing the first reading. In the preferred embodiment, a progress form is used to record the actions of the tutee. The teaching structure may further include an observer and a plurality of tutor/tutee pairs. A tutor selection process is used to select a potential tutor using an application and interview. After selection, there are training sessions for the tutors. The training sessions may include video training sessions, role-playing, and modeling.
