The apparatus is located downstream of the initial coilbox uncoiling station and includes at least one singly pivoting coil cradle. Such a coil cradle has a first support roller with a fixed rotational axis, a swing-frame mounted to pivot about that axis, and a second support roller mounted to the swing-frame, able to pivot about the fixed rotational axis of the first support roller to permit the coil of hot metal to be passed from the coil cradle. In certain embodiments, the apparatus includes a plurality of such singly pivoting coil cradles. The apparatus may also include at least one dually pivoting coil cradle.

The invention relates to a method for expanding the use of a coiling and uncoiling station (coilbox) located between the roughing train and the finishing train for rolled strip material in hot-rolling mills. The use of said coilbox is expanded by impinging the coil that is to be uncoiled with a pressing force (F) which acts in the direction of the roller table (4) and/or placing the coil in a depression of the roller table in order to process smaller coil weights in a spikeless coilbox, and/or by combining, in a chronological and weight-related manner, the active transfer and passive transfer of a coil from a first coiling station to a second coiling station in order to increase the throughput especially at average coil weights in a spikeless coilbox, and/or by supplying heat to the strip upstream or downstream of the spikeless coilbox and/or thermally insulating the strip or the coilbox in order to variably increase and homogenize the strip temperature. The invention further relates to a correspondingly equipped device for carrying out said method.

A decoiler for delivery of wire or rod feed stock to a downstream production machine from a pre-formed coil. The decoiler includes an extended length rotatable mandrel adapted to extend along the interior of the coil such that the mandrel supports loops of the coil in hanging and slidable relation along the mandrel. At least a first feed head is disposed adjacent to the proximal end of the mandrel. The first feed head is adapted to feed the wire or rod feed stock from a rear loop of the coil outwardly in a curved path to form a spiral feed loop having a diameter greater than the coil. A variable height guide element is disposed at a position below the first feed head. The variable height guide element engages and follows an interior of the spiral feed loop to change height with a change in diameter of the spiral feed loop and to provide an output signal for speed control of the first feed head to maintain the diameter of the spiral feed loop within predefined limits.

An apparatus for dispensing lengths of metallic ribbon stock from a dispenser containing a coil of metallic ribbon stock comprises a mounting device for mounting the dispenser, a plurality of roller assemblies, each comprising a roller, and a positioning device operatively connected to each roller assembly, wherein for a given roller assembly, the positioning device operates to insert at least a portion of the roller through an aperture of the dispenser for rotatably engaging the roller with the coil of metallic ribbon stock.
