Designs of pluggable optical passive devices are described. Such a pluggable optical passive device can be inserted into an existing configuration. According to one embodiment, the pluggable optical passive device is formed as an elongated enclosure with one or two first connectors on one side thereof and one or two second connectors on the other side thereof. The first connectors are provided to be coupled to female pluggers while the second connectors are provided to be coupled to male pluggers. Depending on implementation, the first and second connectors may be glued onto or skewed into the enclosure through holes, and may be further extended by a flexible pigtailed dual LC connector.

According to one aspect of the present invention, an assembly including an IR source and an IR sensor is provided to sense blockage of optical signals transmitted between two collimators via a fixed common light blocker that is driven by a stepper motor. The movement of the light blocker is sensed by a sensing assembly including an IR source and IR sensor. By detecting the photocurrent from the IR sensor and a feedback circuit, the attenuation of the optical signals can be well controlled.

Techniques for calibrating tunable optical devices using a probing signal as a reference so as to achieve an accurate control over an absolute wavelength of the tunable optical devices. A probing signal being a calibrated optical signal with a spectrum centered at a desired add/drop channel or wavelength is introduced into an N-port circulator coupled between two tunable optical devices. When the two tunable optical devices are tuned not exactly at the desired wavelength, a portion of probing signal will be reflected or dropped out by the two tunable optical devices. The dropped probing signal is detected and coupled to a signal processor or circuitry configured to generate adjustments to or the control signals for controlling the tunable optical devices in accordance with the reflected probing signal being maximized.

Improved designs of optical multiplexing/demultiplexing module are disclosed for use in multiplexing a composite optical signal into respective individual channels or wavelengths or demultiplexing individual channels or wavelengths into a composite optical signal. According to one embodiment, the optical multiplexing/demultiplexing module comprises an array of collimators, an array of optical filters and an array of mirrors. The collimators are boned to a common substrate after being aligned with a respect optical filter. Different from the prior art devices, the aligned positions of the collimators are secured or help up by preformed wedges. A bonding agent is then applied only to respective contacts between the collimators and the wedges. The wedges are further bonded to a common substrate to secure the collimators.

In various embodiments, free-space optical collimator and multi-channel wavelength division multiplexers including free-space optical collimators are provided. In one embodiment, for example, a free-space optical collimator includes a base having a length, a generally flat bottom surface and a top surface. A groove is disposed along the top surface of the base extending through the length of the base. A lens is disposed within the groove of the base and a fiber optic pigtail is disposed generally adjacent to a focal point of the lens. The lens and fiber optic pigtail are aligned within the groove to reduce an off-angle offset of an optical light signal propagating through the free-space optical collimator. In other embodiments, a process of producing a free-space optical collimator is also provided.

Disclosed herein is wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and demultiplexing with signal entry and exit in a common routing surface to increase channel density. In particular, disclosed is a WDM assembly including a plurality of common ports and a plurality of channel sets having one or more channel ports. The WDM assembly includes a first routing surface with a first WDM passband and a second routing surface offset from the first routing surface. The second routing surface is configured to reflect at least one signal passed through the first routing surface back through the first routing surface at a laterally different location. Optical signal paths of at least a portion of the common ports are parallel to and offset from one another. In certain embodiments, such a configuration may increase channel density and decrease a form factor (e.g., footprint).
