The lateral sides of the implant are pulled inward to force the saddles vertically away from each other, thereby increasing the effective height of the implant. In one version, a strap extends circumferentially around the anterior and posterior surfaces of the spacer, such that tightening the strap causes the saddles to move away from each other. In another version, the spacer includes a first outwardly facing convex segment disposed on a first lateral side of the saddles and a second outwardly facing convex segment disposed on a second lateral side of the saddles. A rod extends between the first and second convex segments and is fixed to the first convex segment and movable relative to the second convex segment.

The expandable spacing device has a first deflated position and a second inflated position. The spacing device is sized to pass through the cannula when in the first deflated position and the spacing device has a predetermined shape in the second inflated position. The material delivery instrument is adapted to inflate the spacing device from the first deflated position to the second inflated position by injecting a biocompatible material into the spacing device. In another aspect, a method of treating at least one annular defect of an intervertebral disc is provided.

This invention relates to orthopedic implants and to methods of treating bone defects. More specifically, but not exclusively, the present invention is directed to non-metallic implants and to methods for intra-operative assembly and fixation of orthopedic implants to facilitate medical treatment. The non-metallic implant assembly can be secured to underlying tissue by a fastener, such as a bone screw, that is capable of swelling on contact with fluid in the underlying tissue. Alternatively, the non-metallic implant assembly can be assembled intra-operatively using a fastener that is adhesively bonded to a bone plate or the bone plate can be deformed using heat, force, or solvents to inhibit withdrawal of the fastener. In preferred embodiments, both the fastener and the bone plate are formed of biodegradable material.
