A mine tunnel support system of the type comprising spaced interconnected support sections is described. Each section includes at least one bearing member which, when the section is in the first, loaded state, bears against the roof of the tunnel. Drive means are provided for changing the location of each support section when in the non-loaded state. The support system is advanced along the tunnel in the forward direction in which mining is proceeding by bringing each section sequentially into the non-loaded state, commencing with that at the rear, moving the section with the drive means into proximity with the next forward section, and thereafter returning the section to the loaded state. Bolting machines may be carried on the support sections. A drill may be provided on one section and a bolt inserter provided on a section rearwardly thereof. As the system is advanced, the bolt inserter can insert a bolt into a hole previously formed by the drill. The operation of providing roof bolts is therefore split into a number of stages. A mechanism for erecting and/or pre-stressing permanent arch supports may be provided at the rear of the sections.

A temporary support for a mine roof is mounted on a mobile roof bolter, and includes a main support frame pivotably connected to the bolter, a main support beam and a ground contacting beam, both extending along the same axis in front of the main support frame, and connected to each other and to the main support frame by a scissors pivot joint and a leveling pivot joint, respectively. When the scissors pivot joint opens and closes, the main support beam and ground contact beam raise and lower with respect to each other and with respect to the ground. A cross beam is mounted on the main support beam and transverse to the axis thereof, and raises and lowers in the same plane with respect to the mine face, to contact and support the mine roof.

A gantry support for supporting a roof of a passage includes two parallel supporting units each having a lower frame provided with articulated tracks and an upper frame carried by props and two cross-members. The two cross-members carry an intermediate upper frame in the form of a beam which is slidable on guide elements and adapted to be clamped to the roof by small jacks. As the support advances the beam remains clamped against the roof of the passage until the beam reaches an end stop. The small jack is then released and the beam slidably advanced along the guide elements by means of a further jack.

The invention refers to a device with which provisional consolidating frames adapted to be brought to a smaller size can be transported to the drift face and can be put in place. According to the invention this device is arranged on the cutting machine itself so that the narrow space remaining between the contour of the cutting machine and the cross section of the drift is sufficient for transporting in forward direction and putting in place the provisional consolidating frames without the necessity to retract the face advancement machine from the drift face. Thus, face advancement machines can be used which occupy the major part of the inside width of the drift, noting that the face advancing machine is maintained in its working position. The invention further describes a doorjamb frame for the provisional drift consolidation and which is particularly suitable for the device proposed.

Shield apparatus for use in tunnelling or mining employs two spaced-apart arcuate frames each composed of a pair of segmental components interconnected at the roof by means of telescopic guides and a central pivot joint. The roof pivot joint between the components of each frame is disposed inside a hollow support and hydraulic rams connect the components to the support. At their lower ends the components of each frame are supported on floor structures connected together with a floor beam. Pivot joints are again formed between the floor structures and the frame components and further telescopic guides and hydraulic rams are arranged between the frame components and the floor structures. The frame components, which may support elongate drive members on their exterior, are adjustable with the aid of the hydraulic rams about the pivot joints to expand or contract the frames.

A loading gate for a mine roof bolter apparatus forms a protective canopy for mine working personnel when opened, and when closed, it seals an opening in the bolter containing manual controls and roof bolt storage cartridges. Access to the stored cartridges and controls by the personnel can only be made when the gate is open. The gate is operated by an over-center toggle joint driven by a hydraulic cylinder. As a fail-safe feature, once the gate has been fully opened, the over-center toggle joint maintains the gate open even upon failure of the hydraulic cylinder.

A webbing of interlaced straps which take shape within edge supporting cables form panels corresponding to the sections, and these panels are integrated by nonrigid connections at the jack structures to make a canopy arrangement constituting the flexible shield.

A machine for setting permanent mine-roadway supports is formed by forward and rearward machine parts interconnected by two double-acting advancing rams, and comprises a canopy adapted to carry a horizontal roof bar (or bars) of a permanent mine roadway support to be set in position by the machine, hydraulic displacement means for advancing the canopy towards the roof of the roadway or for retracting the canopy from the roof of the roadway, and preferably two hydraulic rams carried by, or supported from, the canopy and adapted, in use, to act directly below the roof bar to be set and on the upper ends of the two vertical legs which complete the permanent mine roadway support by displacing the upper ends of these legs from an inclined position to a set position in which both legs engage the roof bar advanced by the canopy to the roof.
