The device includes moving mechanisms for positioning the lower portion between a first operating position, in which it is vertically aligned with the upper portion, and a second operating position, in which it is displaced laterally with respect to the upper portion; a manipulating mechanism, movable between a non-operating position, in which it does not interact with the tubular item, and an operating position, in which it is placed above the tubular item. The switching of the manipulating mechanism from the non-operating position to the operating position takes place by catching the tubular item picked up by the knitting machine and placed close to the lower portion; the manipulating mechanism, in the operating position, manipulates and raises the tubular item so as to position a second free end thereof on the upper axial open end of the tubular item, thus causing or facilitating the insertion of the tubular item into the tubular body.

The method consists in ending the production of an article at one of its axial ends. The article is then picked up from the machine and transferred to a handling device located in a sewing or looping station. The pick-up is performed by transferring individually the loops of the last row of knitting from the needles of the machine to spikes of the handling device, which has an annular body composed of two semiannular elements. The article is then turned, and one of the two semiannular elements is turned over with respect to the other one, so that the spikes of one semiannular element face, and are aligned with, the spikes of the other semiannular element. The loops of knitting arranged on the spikes of one semiannular element are transferred to the spikes of the other semiannular element so that each spike of the latter semiannular element supports a pair of loops of knitting.

An apparatus according to the invention for producing a knitted fabric with interspacing is embodied in the form of a circular knitting machine with knitting cylinders or with a knitting cylinder and a dial. Between the two needle beds for the needle assemblies defined in this way, a pile thread transfer device 4 is arranged, which is preferably provided with two groups 5, 6 of feed elements that can respectively be moved from an idle position to a thread tucking position. In the process, the feed elements of the one group move toward the needle hooks of the first needle bed and the feed elements of the other group move toward the needle hooks of the other needle bed. In this way, a spaced apart knitted fabric can be produced on circular knitting machines, wherein latch needles can be used and the needle stroke is limited to the standard measure of less than 14 mm. The knitted fabric with interspacing can have a thickness of clearly more than 14 mm, meaning a thickness than far exceeds the needle stroke.

A method and an apparatus for manufacturing tubular items, particularly hosiery items, closed at an axial end. The method consists in forming the tubular item on a circular knitting machine by way of the needles of the needle cylinder, starting from the opposite axial end of the item with respect to the axial end to be closed and retaining on the needles of the needle cylinder the last formed row of knitting. The loops of the last row of knitting are then transferred individually from the needles of the needle cylinder to an auxiliary element provided with elements for individually supporting the loops. The supporting elements of at least one half-row of the last row are suitable to receive two loops and to form knitting. The item is reversed before or after transferring it and the loops of one half-row are transferred from the corresponding supporting elements to the supporting elements engaged with the loops of the other half-row. The supporting elements that support the two half-rows form at least one additional row of knitting, closing the axial end of the item, which is then unloaded from the supporting elements.

A method of sewing the toe of a sock is provided which can automatically take out a sock pattern of knitted fabric from a sock knitting machine and sew up the selvedge at the toe portion of the sock pattern of knitted fabric thus improving both the efficiency of production and the energy saving. When a sock pattern of knitted fabric has been fabricated by the sock knitting machine, the transfer needles mounted on a group of transfer needles equipped movable tables are advanced at their tips close to the hooks of knitting needles. Then, the sock pattern of knitted fabric is lifted up and turned inside out by suction to transfer its loops at the toe portion from the knitting needles to the corresponding transfer needles. As a result, the sock pattern of knitted fabric turned inside out is transferred from the sock knitting machine to the transfer needles equipped movable tables. The transfer needles equipped movable tables are then shifted to a linear position to sandwich the loops at the toe portion of the sock pattern of knitted fabric flatly between two row. The transfer needles equipped movable tables is then conveyed to a toe sewing location where the loops at the toe portion of the sock pattern is sewed up automatically with a sewing machine.
