摘要:
A printer and control method therefor for printing to a specific location on an inserted form whether the form is loaded automatically or manually in the printer. When a specific command is received from a host, the printer selects the insertion operation used for the printing form. If automatic loading is selected, the leading edge of the form is set to a specific position in the printer by a form transportation mechanism, and printing then begins. If manually positioned form insertion is selected, printing begins directly with the printing form as inserted and positioned by the user.

A printer includes platen opening/closing means for increasing a gap between a platen and a print head when a printing medium is set to the printer, and cleaning means for cleaning a photo sensor device. The cleaning means removes paper dust, for example, accumulated to such an extent as to interrupt the optical path between the light emitting and receiving elements of the photo sensor device. The cleaning means is controlled by a control means contained in the printer. The control means drives the cleaning means when an output signal level of the photo sensor device is below a predetermined signal level after the printing medium is discharged out of the printer.

Device and methods for acquiring by a host device model information (model ID) of a device assigned in a new range are provided herein. In many embodiments, the device includes a model information storage unit that stores model information from either a first range or a second range outside the first range and a communication unit that communicates with a device that requests model information, receives a model information request, and in response returns the model information if within the first range and returns specific information if the model information is outside the first range. After the specific information is sent, a new request is sent from the host device after which the communication unit provides the model information within the second range, often in a different format from the specific information.

A power supply control apparatus for reducing the frequency of running a specific process in an electronic device when the device power turns on or off too soon after being turned off by monitoring the operating state of the power switch. When the power supply control apparatus detects an operation turning the power to the hybrid processing apparatus 1 off, the power supply control apparatus continues supplying power for as long as needed to complete a given shutdown process. However, if the power supply control apparatus 50 detects an operation turning the device power on again after the power supply stops but before reaching a predetermined reset voltage a reset and restart command is applied to the electronic device. More particularly, if an operation turning the power on again is detected during the period while the power supply is maintained to complete the shutdown process after the operation turning the power off is detected, the command restarts the electronic device without running a process normally run after start up such as a cleaning process in a printer.

The present invention is directed to a printer with a cleaning function in which CPU 103 monitors a detection switch, and performs cleaning and printing operations as required until the detection switch is pressed(step S601). When the detection switch is pressed (step S602 returns yes), the printer 101 indicates a “near end of ink” notice using the display panel 112 or by flashing an LED, for example. A near end of ink notice is also sent to the host computer 120 (step S603). A remaining ink volume counter is then set to a specific value, which in this exemplary embodiment is 5 mg (step S604). When a print command is next received (step S605 returns yes), the ink consumed by the print operation is subtracted from the remaining ink volume, and the difference is stored as the new remaining ink volume (step S606). The CPU 103 then waits for a cleaning command (step S607). When a cleaning command is received, the CPU 103 calculates the ink volume required for the cleaning operation, that is, the above-noted cleaning volume (step S608). If the cleaning volume is greater than the remaining ink volume (step S609 returns no), the cleaning mechanism is not driven, the user is notified that ink tank replacement is required using an LED, display panel 112, and/or notifying the host computer 120 (step S611), and the printing process ends. If the cleaning volume is less than the remaining ink volume (step S609 returns yes), ink jet head cleaning is possible. The cleaning mechanism is therefore driven (step S610) to suction an ink volume determined by the selected cleaning method, and this cleaning process ends.

An apparatus and method for cleaning a printing apparatus based on printing apparatus status information that is stored to memory in response to an externally generated reset signal. Based on the stored information, a cleaning process appropriate to the printer status is selected and performed, thereby minimizing ink consumption. In particular, when a CPU of the printing apparatus detects an external reset signal, which is based on the reset signal received from a host computer 65, the CPU writes the cleaning time, reset time, and other printing apparatus status information to a non-volatile RAM. The CPU is then forcibly reset by an internal reset signal. After being reset, the CPU reads the status information from the non-volatile RAM, and selects and implements a cleaning process appropriate to the stored status information. Ink consumption by the printing apparatus can thus be minimized, and reliable cleaning and printing can be maintained.

A printing apparatus comprises a real-time command interpreter that functions even when the printing apparatus is off-line, and interprets control commands simultaneously with receiving data. The printing apparatus can therefore output pulses to the external devices even when printing is in progress or the printer is off-line. Such printing apparatus comprises a command detector for directly detecting predetermined command data from the received command data. An external controller controls an external device in accordance with predetermined command data detected by the command detection.

A peripheral communications terminal and interfacing method whereby host terminal intercommunication can proceed when the communications terminal is off-line without requiring host driver interface modification. This communications terminal incorporates a communications enabling unit that selectably uses DTR signaling or similar handshaking to notify the host whether data can be received. This communications enabling unit is set to either a first "busy" mode indicating that receipt of streaming data is not possible when the processor of the communications terminal, which possesses at least a printing function, cannot further process data, or a second "override" mode which allows receipt of incoming data to continue even when the processor cannot process data. When the communications enabling unit is set to the override mode and a state in which the terminal processor cannot process data has occurred, the communications terminal control method of the present invention is able to automatically notify the host of such status.
