Abstract:
A positioning mechanism support structure mounted for movement between first and second predetermined positions in a spectroanalytical system includes relative to a reference member by a plurality of stabilizing coupling assemblies, and drive structure for producing motion of the support structure relative to the reference structure between first and second stop structures that define the first and second predetermined positions, respectively. Interlock structure responds to the drive force generated by the drive structure and de-energizes the drive structure in response to the drive force applied to that support structure exceeding a predetermined threshold value.
Abstract:
A sine bar mechanism comprises an arm of radius R pivoted about an axis which is also the axis of a diffraction grating. An elongated member is pivotally mounted at one end, and is pivotally connected to the arm at its other end. The coordinates of the point at the pivotal mounting at one end of the member and the length of the elongated member are chosen to optimize the characteristics of the mechanism. Embodiments in which the elongated member comprises a lead screw and the pivotal connection comprises a nut pivotally attached to the arm and engaging the lead screw are described and their use in various types of monochromators are portrayed.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a grating monochromator for providing monochromatic radiation the wavelength of which is linearly proportional to a translation or rotation, said monochromator comprising an optical device including a reflection grating (1), an entrance slit (4) transmitting a beam onto the optical device, an exit slit (5) transmitting the beam reflected by the optical device, and a mechanism for moving the optical device and at least one of the slits (4,5) with respect to each other. Within said monochromator the moving mechanism is constructed so that in the course of the moving both the entrance slit (4) and the exit slit (5) are always positioned along a Rowland-circle (R) related to the optical device including the grating (1), and there is a transducer (42) producing an output signal corresponding to the current wavelength value, said transducer (42) being connected to a member (33) translating or rotating proportionally to a distance between a point (A) of the Rowland-circle (R) lying diametrically opposite to the optical device and said at least one slits (4,5). The moving mechanism expediently comprises means (41,33) for altering the distance between said point (A) of the Rowland-circle (R) lying diametrically opposite to the optical device and said at least one slit (4,5), and said member (33) translating or rotating proportionally to said distance is a part of said means.

Abstract:
Apparatus for establishing a "home" position for a load element driven axially along the lead screw. A position sensor includes a first sensor element attached for axial travel with the load element and a second sensor element attached for rotation with the lead screw. The pair of sensor elements is operatively aligned at a predetermined relative axial and rotational position establishing the "home" position.
Abstract:
A microprocessor based spectrophotometer including manual keyboard command for sequencing a monochromatic energy beam through a spectral range of wave-lengths to a keyboard selected wavelength. A manual adjustment knob is thereafter rotatable for generating a 4-bit gray code signal which successively changes as the adjustment knob is rotated. The microcomputer senses a change in the gray code signal and indexes (steps) the wavelength of the monochromatic beam in proportion to the positional change of the adjustment knob as indicated by the changing gray code. A visual display indicating wavelength setting and spectral response, is updated conjointly with manual wavelength adjustment.
Abstract:
An improved optical system is disclosed for rapid, accurate spectral analysis of the reflectivity or transmissivity of samples. A concave holographic diffraction grating oscillated at high speed is utilized to provide a rapid scanning of monochromatic light through a spectrum of wavelengths. The grating is positively driven at very high speed by a unique cam drive structure comprising identically shaped conjugate cams. The rapid scan by the grating enables the reduction of noise error by averaging over a large number of cycles. It also reduces the measurement time and thus prevents sample heating by excessive exposure to light energy. A filter wheel having dark segments for drift correction is rotated in the optical path and is synchronous with the grating. Source optics is employed to optimally shape the light source for particular applications. The system optics further includes a unique arrangement of lenses, including cylindrical lenses, to obtain the best light source shape which results in maximum light throughput. Fiber optics are also employed and arranged to meet the optimum requirements of the system for light collection and transmission through portions of the optical system.

Abstract:
A diffraction-grating-type monochromator apparatus having an improved apparatus for rotating the grating is described. The grating is fixedly mounted at the pivot of a follower arm which is pivoted by an arm bearing portion engaging the sloped surface of a wedge-shaped bearing member driven in a direction at an acute angle to the plane of the sloped surface. The wedge-shaped member is a solid wedge or a member in which the acute angle between the sloped surface and the direction of the drive is adjustable.
