At least one receiver receives a signal from the transmitter and at least one proxy receiver is an object that reflects and/or refracts a signal along an arriving path to the at least one receiver. A processor is operative with the at least one receiver and determines the location of the at least one proxy receiver based on one of querying a look-up table or extracting image features from the mapping system and determining the location of the transmitter based on the time of arrival and at least one of angle of arrival of signals from the at least one proxy receiver and transmitter.

System and methods are disclosed for employing one or more radiators having non-unique phase centers mounted to a body with respect to a plurality of transmitters to determine location characteristics of the body such as the position and/or attitude of the body. The one or more radiators may consist of a single, continuous element or of two or more discrete radiation elements whose received signals are combined. In a preferred embodiment, the location characteristics are determined using carrier phase measurements whereby phase center information may be determined or estimated. A distributed antenna having a wide angle view may be mounted to a moveable body in accord with the present invention. The distributed antenna may be utilized for maintaining signal contact with multiple spaced apart transmitters, such as a GPS constellation, as the body rotates without the need for RF switches to thereby provide continuous attitude and position determination of the body.

A radiation source location technique includes focusing a plurality of receivers (i.e., antennas) at the same location. At least one determined characteristic of the radiation received at each receiver provides information regarding the source of that radiation relative to each receiver. Determining a relationship between the determined characteristics allows for determining when the source of radiation is at the location where the receivers are focused. One example includes using high directivity, narrow beamwidth antennas and time based markers from a wireless digital communication signal for locating a mobile unit source of radiation.

A method for location determination using Bluetooth techniques is applicable within buildings, underground or within other structures. A mobile unit (10) seeks the location of a cell from location master (20). Location master (20) and a number of location subsidiaries (21-24) determine ranging information with regard to the mobile unit (10) using Bluetooth techniques. The location master (20) then determines the mobile unit location using least squares estimation or other triangulation methods (50). In an alternate embodiment, ranging information is fine tuned for noise and error measurements between the location master and the location subsidiaries (51, 53) are used.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for locating a wireless device especially useful for locating a cellular telephone making a call from an unknown location. The call may be a request for emergency assistance, or for location-based commercial services, for example. Various embodiments may optionally include a mobile location component, a cellular telephone enabled to chirp-on-demand, and/or an interferometer link. A mobile location component may include a directional antenna. The directional antenna may be mounted on an antenna boom on top of an emergency vehicle, for example. The mobile location component may alternately or additionally comprise a hand-held unit. System elements may cooperate to generate a situation awareness map or other display. The mobile location component may be moved in the general direction of a first location calculation associated with a first circular error of probability. After being moved in the general direction, the mobile location component may cooperate with other elements to determine a second location calculation associated with a second circular error of probability. Second and subsequent location calculations are of increasing precision, enabling an emergency vehicle or attendant to zero in on a cellular telephone.

The invention relates to a method and arrangement for positioning one or more mobile stations, in which the location of the mobile stations is determined in the horizontal direction using at least two radio direction finding stations. Information on the location of each mobile station is maintained on a server. The mobile station measures at least one variable proportional to the location of the mobile station in the vertical direction and signals information on the measurement results to a control unit time-divisionally at the same frequency controlled by the control unit. In the control unit the location of each mobile station is determined in the vertical direction on the basis of the signalled data and the data on the location is conveyed to the server, where the three-dimensional location of the mobile stations is determined. The locations of at least some of the mobile stations are displayed graphically.
