A method for making an opacity relevant grade paper or paperboard product, such as a communication type paper used for printing and writing applications, utilizes an effective amount of quaternized alkanolamine fatty acid ester compounds as an opacification aid to control the optical properties of the paper or paperboard product as a wet-end additive to a papermaking operation. Using the quaternized alkanolamine fatty acid ester compound can improve the opacity of the paper or paperboard product, maintain the opacity of the paper while reducing the use of other opacification aids, such as inorganic fillers and/or pigments, and allow for a reduction in paper grammage without a compromise in opacity. The improvements in paper optical properties are achieved without adversely affecting other characteristics of the paper product such as bulk value, tensile strength, tear index, and the like.

A thermoplastic film is comprised of an admixture of 20 to 85 weight percent cellulose ester fibers and 80 to 15 weight percent cellulose fibers and a functional amount of a cellulose ester plasticizer. The film has an opacity in the range of 10 to 85 percent, a thickness in the range of 0.002 to 0.010 inch, a porosity in the range of 0.0 to 50 ml/min/cm.sup.2 at a 1.0 centibar pressure drop and a compostability of less than 65 days fragmentation. The film is prepared by making a paper comprised of 20 to 85 weight percent cellulose ester fibers and 80 to 15 weight percent cellulose fibers and saturating the paper with a functional amount of a cellulose ester plasticizer. The saturated paper is subjected to heat and pressure for a period of time to obtain the thermoplastic film. The thermoplastic film is prepared without the use of solvents and is economically attractive since it is compatible with conventional paper printing materials and techniques.

A hydrophilic, polymeric blend which provides improved durability and reduced curl when used as an image-receptive layer on graphic arts films. The blend comprises at least one water-absorbing, hydrophilic polymeric material, at least one hydrophobic polymeric material having acid functionality, and at least one polyethylene glycol. The layer formed from the blend provides high sorption capacity combined with good physical integrity even when wet, along with dimensional stability.The invention also provides sheets suitable for preparing visual transparencies having a backing bearing on at least one major surface thereof an image-receptive layer formed from the aforementioned blend.

A fibrous sheet is impregnated or coated with one or more tri or higher functional monomers that can be polymerized in-situ to form three dimensional polymer resins, in close contact with the fibrous material of the sheet. A transparentized fibrous sheet results which is resistant to water and alcohols, highly and evenly translucent and useful as tracing media vellum as well as a translucent base for sensitizing with reprographic coatings.
