The invention disclosed provides a process for recovering niobium values from aqueous hydrofluoric acid solutions by evaporating said solution to dryness and baking the residue at temperatures of 150.degree. to 250.degree. C. The solid residue is niobium oxyfluroide (NbO.sub.2 F) which may then be exothermically reduced with aluminum in the presence of an alloying element such as iron, nickel, or chromium to produce a niobium alloy. The evaporated hydrofluoric acid may be recovered by condensing or absorbing the evolved vapors.

In a method for upgrading the concentration of tantalum and niobium in slags and residues by treating the slags or residues or ore with hydrofluoric acid or a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid to dissolve the tantalum and niobium and extracting the tantalum and niobium from the resulting solution with a ketone to obtain the said elements and a spent acid, the improvement comprising first treating the slags, residue or ore with spent acid containing hydrofluoric acid and/or silicofluoric acid before the dissolution step.

A METHOD OF RECLAIMING TANTALUM FROM A TANTALUM SUBSTRATE HAVING OXIDES OF TANBTALUM THEREON. THE TANTALUM OXIDE COVERED SUBSTRATE IS CONTACTED WITH MOLTEN KHS04 AT A TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF 210*C. TO 450 C. AND IN A WEIGHT RATIO OF AT LEAST TWO PARTS OF KHS04 TO ONE PART OF COMBINED OXIDES. THE SUBSTRATE IN MANTAINED WITHIN THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE RANGE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME SUFFICIENT TO DISSOLVE TO OXIDES AND FORM A SOLUTION. THE SOLUTION COVERED SUBSTRATE IS THEN TREATED WITH WATER TO REMOVE A SOLUTION THEREFROM TO YIELD AN ESSENTIALLY OXIDE-FREE TANTALUM SUBSTRATE.
