Abstract: A fondant feeding method and device for beekeeping. The method and apparatus comprising a raised platform having at least one through hole. The raised platform is placed atop the uppermost box in a standard hive body and fondant is placed above the through hole. Optional mesh within the through hole prevents the fondant from sagging. The platform and fondant are surrounded by an enclosing structure and topped with an inner and outer cover such that the device and food are housed within the hive body and protected from the elements. Bees may cluster freely beneath the chamber created by the raised platform to feed and generate heat. The platform shields the cluster from dripping condensation while simultaneously promoting a fondant consistency that is ideal for feeding.

Abstract: A nursery habitat for flying pollinators has an axially-elongated tubular case and a multiplicity of elongated tubes. The case extends between a first end and a second end and defines an axially-elongated hollow tunnel, wherein at least one of the first end or the second end is provided with an opening. The tubes extending between a front end and a back end wherein at least the front end is open. The multiplicity of elongated tubes is disposed in closely-spaced packing inside the tunnel of the case with the open front ends of the tubes being accessible to flying pollinators through the opening in the case.

Abstract: An inoculation system for a bee hive having a hive opening includes (a) a body mountable to the hive intermediate the hive opening and an outside environment external the hive, (b) a bee pathway in the body for providing passage between the hive opening and the outside environment when the body is mounted to the hive, (c) a removable cartridge installed in the body and having a cartridge chamber storing an inoculum, and (d) an automatic inoculum dispenser in the body. The dispenser is operable to controllably dispense the inoculum from the cartridge chamber into the bee pathway to dust bees passing through the bee pathway with the inoculum.

Abstract: Aspects of this disclosure include a system for providing non-contact, computer-vision based monitoring of the health and pollination activity of a beehive. The system may include camera positioned proximate to a beehive. The camera may include an onboard processor that analyzes video of the beehive captured by the camera and calculates an activity value that estimates a number of bees moving about the beehive. The video calculated activity values may be uploaded to a server where they can be accessed via a user device. The user device may allow the user to display interactive plots of the activity values over a variety of time bases. The disclosed beehive monitoring system relies on relatively lost-cost hardware and requires neither modification to the hive nor special constraints on the placement of the camera.

Abstract: Technologies for monitoring beehives in an apiary includes one or more sensors communicatively coupled to a remote data analysis computing device, which is communicatively coupled to a client computing device. The sensors are configured to monitor beehives and/or the environment of the apiary and transmit the sensed data to the remote data analysis computing device. The remote data analysis computing device is configured to analyze the received sensor data, determine whether to perform an action as a function of a result of the analysis, and perform the function, as applicable. The client computing device is configured to interface with the remote data analysis computing device such that a user of the client computing device can view results of the data analysis and actions, as well as provide input and adjust settings administered by the remote data analysis computing device. A model for assessing beehive strength from an infrared image is also disclosed. Other embodiments are described herein.

Abstract: An artificially-created honey-yielding environment is established, including a hive and an associated flora cell, within which first and second plant populations cohabit. Within the cell, honey-producing insects from the hive are permitted to forage. One of the populations has been artificially introduced. The other may be indigenous to the cell. The first plant population serves as a primary source of nectar which yields bioactive honey and the second serves as a source of a nutrient, such as protein, which is not abundantly available from the first species at a nutritionally adequate level for sustaining the metabolism and energy of the foraging honey-producing insects for returning to the hive. The first flora population may be a Leptospermum species. An example of the second is Corymbia maculata.

Abstract: Monitoring system, device and method for detecting chemicals in an insect environment, such as a beehive or colony. The method can include monitoring the insect environment for the presence of at least one chemical or environmental factor using at least one sensor located within the insect environment, the at least one sensor operative to generate data in response to the presence of at least one chemical or factor in the environment and communicate the data to an associated data processing device, monitoring a population of insects in the insect environment to detect a change in the population or health of insects that make up the population, and generating a correlation between a detected change in the population or health of insects in the insect environment with an increase or decrease of the at least one chemical outside the insect environment.
