The follower (13) has a bottom clevis part (103) adapted to hold detachably the anchor (1) via the anchor shank (2) by means of a fulcrum pin (17) whereby the anchor (1) may swing relative to the bottom part (103). For initial penetration, the anchor (1) is held in a position of minimum forward resistance, specifically with the forward direction F of the fluke (3) parallel to the follower axis (20) and this is achieved by a shear pin (109) between the anchor (1) and the bottom part (103). When the anchor (1) is embedded to a preferred depth (d) specifically at least twice the square root of the maximum projected fluke area (as viewed normal to direction F), the anchor (23) is moved to a position for anchor setting by pulling on an attached anchor cable (4/4A) so causing the shear pin (109) to fracture and the anchor (23) to rotate about the fulcrum axis until arrested by a stop (21) on the follower (13). The follower (13) can then be pulled clear and recovered. The above anchoring arrangement provides a considerably improved anchoring performance in comparison with existing direct embedment arrangements.

The present invention is a self-contained hydraulic hammer which is mounted on a hydraulically mobile frame. The hydraulic hammer is capable of travelling in either forward or reverse directions and is provided with liftable weights to which a tool for digging or breaking up a surface is attached. The hydraulic hammer is equipped with time delay controls which: 1) momentarily stop the travel of the hydraulic hammer as the weights and the attached digging tool free fall from a raised position until the digging tool impacts the surface to be busted up, and 2) cause the hydraulic hammer to resume travel as the weights are again raised in preparation for another impact. The hydraulic hammer rapidly repeats these cycles of impact and travel to break up a surface. Adjustments are provided on the hydraulic hammer for regulating the force of the impact and the distance travelled between impacts in order to match the hydraulic hammer's impact and travel cycles to the break characteristics of the surface to be removed.

A relatively simple pile driver includes a tubular holder with a closed top end and an open bottom end for receiving a pile; a tubular hammer with a closed bottom end and an open top end, the hammer containing lead and being mounted on the holder; four guide rods extending through large plates closing the top end of the holder and the bottom end of the hammer permitting controlled vertical movement of the hammer above the holder, the guide rods extending upwardly to a positioning plate above the hammer; a pair of cables extending upwardly from the plate closing the top end of the holder and through slots in the positioning plate to a bar, which is connected to a crane or other lifting apparatus by another cable for positioning the pile drive; and a pair of hydraulic cylinders extending upwardly from a pair of brackets on the bottom end of the holder, with piston rods extending upwardly from the open top ends of the cylinders to brackets on the hammer above the holder, whereby, the hammer can be raised and, when hydraulic fluid is vented from the cylinders, the hammer is free to fall against the holder to drive a pile into the ground.
