The invention relates to a method of reducing emissions of byproduct gas when charging oven chambers of a battery of coking ovens, on the proviso that the oven chamber (1) to be charged is opened on the machine side (MS) of the battery of coking ovens, and a block of compressed coal (10) is introduced into the opened oven chamber (1). Byproduct gases released during introduction of the block of compressed coal (10) into the hot oven chamber (1), are discharged through a byproduct-gas manifold (11) attached to the oven chamber (1) and are then preferably freed of dust and incinerated. Crude gases formed in the closed oven chambers during coking are discharged through a crude-gas manifold (3) attached to the oven chambers (1) and are passed on for treatment by at least one gas scrubber. According to the invention, conduits connecting the crude-gas manifold (3) and the byproduct-gas manifold (11) to the oven chambers (1) are alternately opened and closed such that the byproduct gases that form during the charging of the oven chambers (1) are admitted only into the byproduct-gas manifold (11), and that the crude gases that form during coking in the closed oven chambers are fed only into the crude-gas manifold (3).

Method for exhausting from coke ovens gases evolved during charging with the use of a conduit interconnecting an opening in the roof of a coke oven chamber being charged with a corresponding opening in a nearby oven. According to the inveniton, near one of the ends of the conduit interconnecting the two ovens a communication with the atmosphere can be made without disturbing the gas-tight connection between the other end and the nearby oven. One way of achieving this is for the sealing zone or closure portion which dips into a water seal in a riser for a coke oven chamber to be shorter than the other end such that when the conduit is raised the shorter end will permit atmospheric air to flow into the conduit. In another embodiment, a socket is provided at one end of the conduit and has a pivoting flap which, in one position, closes the socket and in another position, closes the gas-exhaust opening. Another embodiment of the invention employs a sleeve in which a tubular member having a bottom sealing zone or closure portion is movable, such portion dipping into a water seal when lowered and clearing the water seal when raised. Still another embodiment of the invention employs internal cover lifters.

A jumper pipe forms a passageway between the free spaces above coal charges in adjacent coking chambers for the natural flow of relatively cooler coke oven gas from the free space above the coal charge in the most recently charged one of the coking chambers into the free space above the coal charge in the other of the coking chambers to reduce the relatively higher temperature therein. An inert atmosphere is maintained along at least part of the passageway to prevent the flow of coke oven gas essentially during decarburization and the pushing of coke from either of the two adjacent coking chambers. Valve members at opposite end portions of the jumper pipe are moved to at least partially-closed positions to facilitate the maintenance of an inert atmosphere therein. A supply or steam or gaseous nitrogen is used to maintain the inert atmosphere in the jumper pipe. The inert gas prevents the entrance of coke oven gas into a coking chamber while undergoing decarburization.

A system for preventing effluents containing coal dust from being emitted from a coke oven upon charging the coke oven with coal. A U-tube mounted on a larry car interconnects the charging oven with a coking oven and an air valve mixes air with the effluents being transferred from the charging oven to the coking oven. A venturi tube is in communication with the coking oven on the side thereof away from the U-tube and has a steam jet therein to provide sufficient draft across the coking oven to draw the effluents. The restriction in the venturi tube accelerates the effluents through the venturi tube to accommodate all of the effluents produced during the charging of the coke oven.
