Abstract: A method and an apparatus for manufacturing, with thermal treatment, biocoal which is non-energent, such as functional as a heat sink, by using a conveyor arrangement housed in an essentially Thompson Converter type process space. A to-be-processed feedstock is conveyed in the process space with the conveyor arrangement, which is closed relative thereto, in a longitudinal direction of the process space. A pyrolysis gas, generated from the to-be-processed feedstock present inside the conveyor arrangement as a result of heat transferring from the process space thereto, is conducted into a combustion chamber included in the process space for burning the gas, a thereby generated flue gas being removed from the process space by a discharge arrangement and a resulting non-energent biocoal being removed from the conveyor arrangement for further processing.

Abstract: The invention provides a carbonaceous feed pyrolysis apparatus including two or more hot particle fluidised beds, and material transfer means for the transfer of hot catalyst particles between two or more of the beds, wherein one or more of the 5 fluidised beds is a gasifier which contains a gasification zone and one or more of the fluidised beds is a pyrolysis reactor which contains a pyrolysis zone, so that the particles are recirculated and serve as an energy carrier to drive pyrolysis in the pyrolysis zone. The invention extends to a carbonaceous feed pyrolysis process using said apparatus.

Abstract: A biochar production system includes a reactor body, a central rod disposed within the reactor body, a leveling arm extending from the central rod and configured to rotate about the central rod, and a bed level sensor system. The bed level sensor system includes a float configured to move from a resting position on a biomass in the reactor to an ending position upon contact with the leveling arm, and a level sensor coupled to the float via a connector. The level sensor is configured to correspondingly move with the float. A controller is configured to detect bed levels of the biomass within the reactor body, and determine a plurality of sample readings based on the detected bed levels.

Abstract: In some variations, the invention provides a biocarbon pellet comprising: 35 wt % to 99 wt % of a biogenic reagent, wherein the biogenic reagent comprises, on a dry basis, at least 60 wt % carbon; 0 wt % to 35 wt % water moisture; and 1 wt % to 30 wt % of a binder, wherein the biocarbon pellet is characterized by an adjustable Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) from about 30 to about 120, as shown in the Examples. The pellet HGI is adjustable by controlling process conditions and the pellet binder. The binder can be an organic binder or an inorganic binder. The carbon is renewable as determined from a measurement of the 14C/12C isotopic ratio. Many processes of making and using the biocarbon pellets are described. Applications of the biocarbon pellets include pulverized coal boilers, furnaces for making metals such as iron or silicon, and gasifiers for producing reducing gas.

Abstract: A method of evaluating coal includes preparing coal samples having different inert amounts by pulverizing one brand of coal; measuring the inert amounts of the respective coal samples and measuring surface tensions of semi-coke obtained by heat treating the respective coal samples; and determining a regression line based on the inert amounts and the surface tensions and evaluating the coal by using, as an index, a ratio of a variation in the surface tensions to a variation in the inert amounts as determined from the regression line.
