By pivoting the grooving tool about the pivot axis, it moves along the axial direction of the insertion end forming the grooves. A plurality of the grooving tools can be ganged together and moved by a single drive unit for simultaneously forming angularly spaced grooves in the insertion end.

A method is disclosed for preparing a surface for mechanically securing a spray coating to a surface. A first series of grooves formed in the surface are intersected with a second series of grooves formed in the surface. A plurality of barbs are formed at the intersections. The spray coating is mechanically secured to the barbs that overhang the first series of grooves. The surface includes the first series of grooves and the second series of groves that intersect the first series of groves. The second series of groves form an undercut portion, or barb, at the intersections of the grooves that mechanically anchor the spray coating.

At least one rolling element (180A, 180B, 180C) of a machining tool (100) is rolled here under a contact pressure against a section (198) to be machined of the curved workpiece surface. An external surface of the rolling element has a rough surface structure in at least one working section (190A, 190B, 190C) intended for rolling contact with the workpiece surface. The contact pressure is set in such a manner that, during the rolling, a rough roll-embossed structure is produced by local deformation of workpiece material without removing material in the machined region of the workpiece surface. The machining method can be used, for example, for machining the internal surface of a bore in a workpiece, in particular for roughening the workpiece surface for a subsequent coating.

A method and apparatus for producing a disc structure. The disc provides a radially extending annular wall formed by pressing a workpiece against a contoured tool with a pressure roll. The contoured tool and workpiece move relative to the pressure roll about a first axis while the tool and pressure roll move toward each other in the direction of the first axis. The pressure roll rotates about a second axis perpendicularly intersecting the first axis and provides a cylindrical working surface. The tooling is arranged to radially confine the workpiece. In one embodiment, the tool is formed with a plurality of ribs extending in the direction of the first axis. These ribs cooperate to produce annular grooves in the workpiece along the surface thereof remote from the pressure roll. One embodiment provides a disc particularly suited for use in electromagnetic clutches. The other embodiment may be used to produce wheels, pulleys, and the like.
