A powered compound miter saw that can perform miter and bevel cuts and which is adapted so that the saw blade can be moved to provide a wide cut. In particular, the compound miter saw employs a sliding mechanism that provides consistent cutting performance as the saw blade is moved from a fully retracted to a fully extended position even when the saw blade is making a severe bevel cut. The sliding mechanism employs three slide bars which have the saw blade mounted on one end thereof and which can laterally move within a housing. The slide bars are configured in a triangular arrangement and are supported within the housing by a combination of linear ball bearings and a plastic bushing.

By means of a pair of relatively hard washers positioned upon respective upper and lower support arms, and by means of a relatively hard pin, the applied force of and pressure resulting from use of the saw is concentrated on the hard steel washer and the pin. This structure permits the main body of the suspension device to be formed from a relatively soft material.

An opening is defined in the handle and a switch device is received in the opening with which a cover is engaged. A recess is defined in an outer periphery of the cover and a hole is defined through the cover. A pushing member is slidably engaged with the recess and a stepped protrusion extending from an underside of a first end of the pushing member is engaged with an inner periphery of the hole. A gap is defined between a second end of the pushing member and a surface defining the recess. An activation member is connected to the sliding member via the hole and has a convex contacting the switch device. A spring is connected between the cover and the activation member. The activation member shuts off the switch device when the sliding member is pulled by the spring by pushing the second end of the pushing member.

The work surface defines a first side extending laterally on one side of the blade, and a second side extending laterally on an opposite side of the blade relative to the first side, and the first and second sides of the work surface are each tiltable about the 0.degree. plane through upper and lower angular segments of approximately 45.degree.. An angular adjustment member is connected between the table and frame, and a plurality of stop surfaces are angularly spaced relative to each other in select angular locations on its lower edge. A stop member is urged by a coil spring into engagement with the lower edge of the adjustment member, and is engageable with each stop surface in response to pivotal movement of the table to thereby stop the adjustment member and table in the select angular positions. An adjustment knob extends through a slot formed in the angular adjustment member, and is threadedly attached to the frame for rotation into engagement with the adjustment member to thereby lock the selected position of the adjustment member and table in place.
