Abstract:
A self-contained adapter that is connected to a surgical console. The adapter contains all of the components necessary to allow different cassettes to be used with the surgical console.
Abstract:
An assembly for a phacoemulsification surgical system includes an aspiration system arranged to aspirate fluid from a surgical site. The aspiration system includes an aspiration path within the phacoemulsification hand piece and includes a flexible small bore aspiration tubing in fluid communication with the aspiration path. The small bore aspiration tubing has a nominal inner diameter smaller than about 0.050 inch to reduce levels of occlusion surge within the surgical system. A high-output, peristaltic pump communicates with the small bore aspiration tubing and is operable to create a flow through the small bore aspiration tubing.
Abstract:
According to one exemplary aspect, this disclosure is directed to an aspiration system for a phacoemulsification surgical system. The system includes a pump and a flexible tubing configured to convey aspiration fluid from a hand piece to the pump. The flexible tubing includes a non-compliant, resistive element associated with the hand piece and disposed between the surgical site and the flexible tubing. The resistive element comprises a fluid pathway having substantially consistent nominal inner diameter and being configured to convey the aspiration fluid to the flexible tubing, the resistive element being formed in a compact orientation that provides a nonlinear fluid pathway length that is significantly greater than the axial length of the resistive element. The resistive element is structurally configured to provide occlusion surge resistance due to pressure changes resulting from occlusions in the aspiration path at the hand piece needle.
Abstract:
A surgical system and cassette, the cassette having an identification method that is specific to the cassette. Suitable methods include bar coding or Radio Frequency Identification (“RFID”). Cassette information that may be encoded include features such as lot number and performance characteristics, such as pressure sensor calibration data, flow and pressure data and any other performance characteristics of the cassette captured during testing of the cassette at manufacture.
Abstract:
A surgical system having a cassette with an aspirant collection chamber and an aspiration exhaust line that drains into the aspirant collection chamber. A fluid line containing a valve allowing fluid from the irrigation fluid container to be vented into the aspirant collection chamber. A source of pressurized air is connected to the irrigation fluid container and is used to pressurize the fluid container. When the pressure within the fluid container needs to be increased, pressurized air from the pressurized air source is allowed to enter the fluid container. When the pressure within the fluid container needs to be decreased, irrigation fluid is allowed to be bled out of the fluid container and inter the collection chamber. In this manner, a direct fluidic connection with the gas contained within the fluid container does not need to be maintained.

Abstract:
A phacoemulsification fluidics system for irrigating and aspirating a surgical site includes a sterile solution reservoir, an irrigation path configured to extend from the sterile solution reservoir to the surgical site, and an aspiration path configured to extend from the surgical site. The system also includes a single flow control pump head associated with both the irrigation path and the aspiration path. The flow control pump head is arranged within the system to simultaneously pressurize the irrigation path in a manner that drives the irrigation fluid to the surgical site and pressurize the aspiration path in a manner that vacuums waste fluid from the surgical site.
Abstract:
A system and method for generating a calibration data curve, including communicating known calibration data for a microsurgical cassette to a surgical console with which the cassette will be used.
