    Abstract: A cable-driven device, such as a joint or instrument of a computer-assisted manipulator system, may comprise a capstan mechanism to wind/unwind cables. The capstan mechanism comprises a capstan that has a groove in an outer surface of the capstan to guide the cables, which are routed from a take-up pulley, to spool onto the capstan as the capstan rotates. A guide element is engaged with the groove. The guide element is held translationally stationary relative to the take-up pulley, while there is relative translation between the capstan and both the guide element and the take-up pulley. Thus, as the capstan rotates, the guide element engages with the groove and forces the capstan and the take-up pulley to translate relative to one another. This relative translation of the capstan and the take-up pulley may prevent deviation of a take-up angle of the cable as the cable spools onto the capstan.

    Abstract: A manipulator for articulating a surgical instrument may comprise an instrument holder configured to couple with the surgical instrument and to pivot about a remote center of motion. The manipulator may comprise a linkage assembly coupled to the instrument holder and configured to constrain rotational motion of the instrument holder to pivot about the remote center of motion. The linkage assembly may comprise a first, second, and third linkage arms. The second linkage arm may be rotatably coupled to the first linkage arm with a proximal end of the first linkage arm and a proximal end of the second linkage arm coupled at a proximal pivot joint. A third linkage arm may be translationally coupled to the second linkage arm. Movement of the second linkage arm and the third linkage arm may cause a distal end of the third linkage arm to trace an arc around the remote center of motion.

    Abstract: A method for providing a visual expiration indication for a surgical instrument includes holding an indicator body in a first position with a detent mechanism to provide a visual in-service indication for the surgical instrument. The indicator body is engaged with a motor and the indicator body is rotated with the motor from the first position to a second position that provides a visual expired indication. The indicator body is prevented from rotating from the second position to the first position with the detent mechanism. The detent mechanism may hold the indicator body in one of only two positions. The visual indications may be displayed through an aperture fixed to the base of the surgical instrument. The indicator body may be elastically deformed when the indicator body is rotated from the first position to the second position. The motor may be rotated to gain momentum before rotating the indicator body.

A door mechanism according to some embodiments of the present invention includes a door that includes a sealing part, an arm connected to the sealing part, and a pivot part connected to the arm, the door rotating around a pivot axis at the pivot part; and a lever, the lever engaging the door at the pivot part such that the lever opens the door when engaged but is not affected when the door is opened without the lever.
