    Abstract: The optical fibers disclosed is a single mode optical fiber having a core region and a cladding region surrounding and directly adjacent to the core region. The core region can have a radius r1 in a range from 3.0 microns to 6.0 microns and a core volume V1 less than 6.0%-micron2. The cladding region can include a first outer cladding region and a second outer cladding region surrounding and directly adjacent to the first outer cladding region. The first outer cladding region can have a radius r4a, the second outer cladding region can have a radius r4b less than or equal to 65 microns and comprising silica based glass doped with titania. The disclosed single mode optical fiber can have a fiber cutoff wavelength λCF less than 1530 nm.

    Abstract: A multicore optical fiber is provided that includes a first core with silica glass doped with chlorine and/or an alkali metal, a first inner cladding surrounding the first core, and a first outer cladding surrounding the first inner cladding and having a first trench region having a volume of about 30%Δ-micron2 or greater. The multicore optical fiber also includes a second core with silica glass doped with chlorine and/or an alkali metal, a second inner cladding surrounding the second core, and a second outer cladding surrounding the second inner cladding and having a second trench region having a volume of about 30%Δ-micron2 or greater. Additionally, a common cladding surrounds the first core and the second core, and the first core and the second core each have an effective area at 1550 nm of about 100 micron2 or less.

    Abstract: A system for disinfecting a medical device is provided. The system includes a light source that generates light having at least one wavelength between about 100 nm and about 500 nm. The system further includes at least one cylindrical optical diffuser disposed in optical communication with at least one interior channel of a medical device, the at least one cylindrical optical diffuser having an outer surface and an end optically coupled to the light source. The at least one cylindrical optical diffuser is configured to scatter guided light through the outer surface to form a light diffuser portion having a length that emits substantially uniform radiation over its length.

    Abstract: According to embodiments, an optical fiber may include a core portion comprising a radius rC, a centerline CL, a numerical aperture NA greater than or equal to 0.15 and less than or equal to 0.25, a graded relative refractive index profile having a maximum relative refractive index ΔCmax and an α value greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to 3. The core portion may include an up-dopant with a graded concentration from the radius rC to the centerline CL and an attenuation dopant with a constant concentration from the centerline CL of the core portion to the radius rC of the core portion. The optical fiber is multi-moded for wavelengths of light within a range from 800 nm to 1350 nm and an attenuation of the optical fiber wavelengths between 800 nm and 1000 nm is greater than or equal to 0.5 dB/m.

    Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure relates to a light-diffusing element. The light diffusing element includes a glass core having a first refractive index. The light diffusing element also includes a cladding surrounding the glass core. The cladding includes an inner cladding surface and an outer cladding surface. The inner cladding surface and the outer cladding surface define a cladding thickness of from 5 μm to 30 μm. The cladding has a second refractive index that is less than the first refractive index of the glass core. The light diffusing element also includes a coating surrounding the cladding. The coating has an inner coating surface and an outer coating surface. The inner coating surface contacts the outer cladding surface.
