Abstract: A single-use medical syringe has a syringe lock that prevents repeated syringe aspiration and dispensing of fluids to patients. A pivoting syringe lock is coupled to the proximal open end of the syringe barrel. The syringe lock has or more cantilever lock forks in continuous, biased, sliding, abutting contact with the plunger. Each lock fork engages a corresponding plunger detent oriented on a proximal end of the syringe plunger, after the plunger is fully advanced within the syringe barrel. The plunger remains locked in an advanced position within the syringe barrel while each lock fork is engaged in its corresponding plunger detent. In some embodiments, a removeable plunger clip is coupled to the syringe to prevent inadvertent advancement of the plunger into the syringe barrel and premature locking of the syringe prior to administration of medication to a patient.

Abstract: A connector safety shield configured to engage a needle free connector comprises a push cap slidably mounted on an external enclosure cap that encloses a spray chamber containing disinfectant that can be pushed multiple times out of perforations in the bottom of the spray chamber and onto the distal end of the needle free connector by action of a stopper mounted in the spray chamber and operably connected to the push cap. The connector safety shield also comprises a bottom enclosure cap that can engage the needle free connector and thus lock the connector safety shield onto the needle free connector. A hinge connecting the bottom enclosure cap and the assembly of the external closure cap, spray chamber, and push cap allows the assembly of the external closure cap, spray chamber, and push cap to be rotated out of connection with the needle free connector such that the needle free connector can be connected to another device or object such as a syringe or other vascular access device. The assembly of the external closure cap, spray chamber, and push cap can be rotated back into connection with the needle free connector and used to spray the distal end of the needle free connector with disinfectant once the other device or object such as a syringe or other vascular access device is removed.

Abstract: A cap is described for connection to a needleless connector having an open lumen, the cap includes a housing having a top wall and sidewall forming a first cavity, a flexible container, an porous absorbent material and a sealing rubber. The flexible container includes an inner thread on an inner surface, the inner thread being sufficient to interlock with a mating feature of a female needleless connector. The inner surface of the flexible container defines a second cavity. The sidewall of the housing having a split-thread protrusion integrally formed with the distal wall, an outer thread disposed on an outer surface of the split-thread protrusion, the outer thread being sufficient to interlock with a mating feature of a male needleless connector. The second cavity configured to define a chamber to contain an absorbent reservoir material, a sealing rubber and disinfectant or antimicrobial agent.

Abstract: A flush syringe with a syringe coupler facilitates twice dispensing of intravenous flushing solution to a patient's vascular access device (VAD), with reduced risk of VAD infection. The syringe coupler incorporates a female, first Luer connector on its proximal end that is removably coupled to the male, barrel Luer connector of the syringe, isolating the latter connector from external contamination. The syringe coupler also has a single-use, male, second Luer connector on its distal end of the housing that is adapted for coupled insertion into the patient's VAD, for delivery of at least a portion of the flushing solution retained within the syringe. After the first delivery, the syringe coupler is de-coupled from both the VAD and the syringe. Thereafter, the syringe's unused, sterile, male, barrel Luer connector is directly coupled to the VAD for dispensing the second portion of the flushing solution.

Abstract: A medical syringe reduces medication waste that dispensing medication remaining within the syringe's Luer tip. The syringe plunger incorporates a ramrod with a jag on its distal end that is inserted through the Luer tip's lumen when the plunger is fully advanced into the syringe barrel. A center through bore of a syringe stopper is slidably coupled to the ramrod in fluid-sealed abutting contact. The center bore is initially oriented on the ramrod over the jag. Medication is aspirated into the syringe while the stopper is in its initial, axial position. The last, dose of medication is dispensed by advancing with the plunger with sufficient pressure to abut the stopper into contact with and translate the ramrod jag through the lumen of the Luer tip, thereby dispensing medication that was retained within the lumen.

Abstract: A syringe with an integrated vein finder is disclosed, which illuminates a potential venipuncture site of a patient and identifies a vein that is suitable for venipuncture with the syringe, for blood collection or intravenous drug administration. The syringe portion of the system includes a syringe barrel and a pointed-tip needle projecting from the distal end of the barrel for venipuncture. An illumination module is coupled to the syringe barrel; it has an illumination source that projects an electromagnetic beam into an illumination zone distal the syringe's pointed tip, for illuminating and identifying a subcutaneous vein. The integrated vein finder and syringe system is operable by a sole clinician, such as a phlebotomist, who can easily manipulate the syringe and illuminate the venipuncture site with one hand, without assistance of another clinician.
