    Abstract: A display device includes a first support plate and a second support plate. A pixel region between the first support plate and the second support plate includes a plurality of pixel wall portions over the first support plate forming a perimeter of the pixel region. A first liquid and a second liquid that is immiscible with the first liquid are disposed in the pixel region. A light-blocking layer is disposed on an inner surface of the second support plate. The light-blocking layer includes a light-blocking portion positioned over a first pixel wall portion of the plurality of pixel wall portions. An electrically conductive layer comprising an electrically conductive portion is disposed on a first surface of the light-blocking portion. A recessed region is aligned with the electrically conductive portion such that a portion of the second liquid disposed within the recessed region contacts the electrically conductive portion.

    Abstract: A display device includes a first support plate and an opposing second support plate. A first pixel region between the first support plate and the second support plate includes a first thin film transistor (TFT) structure over the first support plate. A second pixel region between the first support plate and the second support plate and adjacent the first pixel region includes a second TFT structure over the first support plate. A first pixel wall portion is positioned over the first support plate between the first pixel region and the second pixel region such that each of the first TFT structure and the second TFT structure is positioned adjacent the first pixel wall portion. A light-blocking portion is disposed on an inner surface of the second support plate and positioned over the first TFT structure and the second TFT structure.

    Abstract: An electrowetting element comprising a first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid. A support plate comprises an electrode, a support plate surface and a substrate. An inorganic dielectric layer is located between the substrate and the support plate surface and is transmissive to light in the visible spectrum. An organic dielectric layer is located between the substrate and the support plate surface and is transmissive to visible light. The inorganic dielectric layer has an inorganic dielectric layer deformation behavior and the organic dielectric layer has an organic dielectric layer deformation behavior substantially equal to the inorganic dielectric layer deformation behavior.

    Abstract: An electrowetting display device comprises a first fluid, an array of electrowetting elements, each respectively comprising a portion of the first fluid, and a first support plate. The first support plate comprises a first region extending along a first edge of the first support plate and a second region extending along a second edge of the first support plate. The first and second regions are located outside the array of electrowetting elements, and the first region is non-overlapping the second region. A first electrode is located in the first region and an electrical component is located in the second region. A second support plate of the electrowetting display device includes a second electrode in electrical contact with a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid. An electrical connector connects the first electrode to the second electrode and a conductor connects the first electrode to the electrical component.

    Abstract: A device includes first and second support plates. A plurality of pixel walls are formed over the first support plate. The plurality of pixel walls are associated with an electrowetting pixel and define a volume. The electrowetting pixel includes a fluid accumulation region defined by a recess in a hydrophobic layer of the electrowetting pixel. A transistor is over the first support plate underneath a first pixel wall in the plurality of pixel walls and a pixel electrode is formed over the first support plate underneath the volume defined by the plurality of pixel walls in electrical contact with the transistor. A bottom electrode is formed over the first support plate underneath the volume defined by the plurality of pixel walls. A first portion of the bottom electrode is located underneath the fluid accumulation region and a second portion of the bottom electrode is located underneath the pixel electrode.
