Abstract: A display may have an active area that includes display pixels. The display may include an inactive notch region that extends into the active area. Data lines may provide image data from display driver circuitry to the display pixels. The image data may include data signals that correspond to portions of the display that do not include pixels, such as the inactive notch region. The null data signals may cause nonuniformities in the displayed image. The null data signals may be adjusted to minimize the nonuniformities. Null data signals corresponding to the inactive notch region may be adjusted to have gray levels that gradually decrease with distance from the border between the inactive notch and the active area. All of the data signals corresponding to the inactive notch may be set to a uniform gray level.

Abstract: A thin-film transistor layer, an organic light-emitting diode layer, and other layers may be used in forming an array of pixels on a substrate in a display. Vias may be formed through one or more layers of the display such as the substrate layer to form vertical signal paths. The vertical signal paths may convey signals between display driver circuitry underneath the display and the pixels. The vias may pass through a polymer layer and may contact pads formed within openings in the substrate. Vias may pass through a glass support layer. Metal traces may be formed in the thin-film transistor layer to create signal paths such as data lines and gate lines. Portions of the metal traces may form vias through a polymer layer such as a substrate layer or a polymer layer that has been formed on top of the substrate layer.

Abstract: An organic light-emitting diode display may have an active area that contains pixels and an inactive area. The inactive area of the display may be provided with opaque masking layer structures having an appearance that matches the active area of the display when the pixels are off and are not displaying images. The opaque masking layer structures may include a polymer layer coated with a layer of metal. The display may have pixels with anodes and a cathode layer. The anodes may be formed from metal pads. Dummy structures such as a dummy cathode and dummy anodes may be formed in the inactive area. A circular polarizer in the display may overlap the active area and the inactive area or may overlap the active area without overlapping some or all of the inactive area.

Abstract: An electronic device may include a display and a sensor under the display. The display may include an array of subpixels for displaying an image to a user of the electronic device. At least a portion of the array of subpixels may be selectively removed in a pixel removal region to improve optical transmittance to the sensor through the display. The pixel removal region may include a plurality of pixel free regions that are devoid of thin-film transistor structures, that are devoid of power supply lines, that have continuous open areas due to rerouted row/column lines, that are partially devoid of touch circuitry, that optionally include dummy contacts, and/or have selectively patterned display layers.

Abstract: An electronic device may include a display and an optical sensor formed underneath the display. The electronic device may include a plurality of transparent windows that overlap the optical sensor. The resolution of the display panel may be reduced in some areas due to the presence of the transparent windows. To mitigate diffraction artifacts, a first sensor (13-1) may sense light through a first pixel removal region having transparent windows arranged according to a first pattern. A second sensor (13-2) may sense light through a second pixel removal region having transparent windows arranged according to a second pattern that is different than the first pattern. The first and second patterns of the transparent windows may result in the first and second sensors having different diffraction artifacts. Therefore, an image from the first sensor may be corrected for diffraction artifacts based on an image from the second sensor.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display mounted in a housing. The display may have a pixel array that produces images. A display cover layer may overlap the pixel array. The display cover layer may have a planar central area surrounded by a peripheral edge area with a curved cross-sectional profile. From an on-axis viewing angle, an image on the pixel array is fully viewable through the planar central area and the peripheral edge area. From an off-axis viewing angle, the image is partly viewable through the peripheral edge area and not through the central area. To avoid an undesired color cast in the partly viewable image seen through the peripheral edge area of the display cover layer, the display may be provided with color cast compensation structures such as a guest-host liquid crystal layer that exhibits an anisotropic colored light absorption characteristic, a diffuser layer, and/or other optical structures.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display with pixels configured to display an image. The pixels may be overlapped by a cover layer. The display may have peripheral edges with curved cross-sectional profiles. An inactive area in the display may be formed along a peripheral edge of the display or may be surrounded by the pixels. Electrical components such as optical components may be located in the inactive area. An image transport layer may be formed from a coherent fiber bundle or Anderson localization material. The image transport layer may overlap the pixels, may have an opening that overlaps portions of the inactive area, may have an output surface that overlap portions of the inactive area, and/or may convey light associated with optical components in the electronic device.
