Abstract: A head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing. The head-mounted housing may have rear-facing displays that display images for a user. The images are viewable from eye boxes while the head-mounted device is being worn by the user. The displays may be mounted in left and right optical modules that have respective left and right lenses. A positioning system may be used to adjust the spacing between the left and right optical modules to accommodate different interpupillary distances. An adjustable heat extraction system may be provided that includes fans configured to force air between airflow inlets and outlets past heat sinks. The heat sinks may have fins that are adjusted in orientation and/or that are otherwise adjusted based on changes in optical module spacing. The airflow inlets and/or outlets may have adjustable louvers or other movable members that allow these ports to be fully opened, fully closed, or partly closed.

Abstract: A head-mounted device may have left and right optical modules that present images to a user's eyes. Each optical module may have an optical module support structure and a lens and display coupled to the optical module support structure. The head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing that supports the optical modules. A cover on a rear face of the head-mounted housing may have a pair of openings configured to receive the left and right optical modules. The cover may have a cover layer and left and right cover layer mounting rings respectively configured to engage with the optical module support structures of the left and right optical modules. Sets of magnets in the left and right optical modules may be configured to attract corresponding left and right vision correction lenses. Gaskets may surround the lenses in the optical modules and may prevent environmental contaminant intrusion.

Abstract: A head-mounted device may have optical modules that present images to the user's left and right eyes. The optical modules may move with respect to each other to accommodate different user interpupillary distances. Each optical module may have a lens barrel, a display coupled to the lens barrel that generates an image, and a lens mounted to the lens barrel through which the image is viewable from an eye box. The lens may be a multi-element lens formed from molded lens elements such as molded polymer lens elements. A lens element may be provided with protrusions that form lens tabs. The lens tabs may have coplanar lens tab surfaces that mate with corresponding coplanar mounting surfaces in the lens barrel. Alignment marks may be formed on the protrusions and/or other portions of the lens.

Abstract: An electronic device such as a head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing that separates an exterior region from an interior region. Optical modules may be mounted in alignment with openings in the rear of the housing. Each optical module may have a display and a lens through which an image on the display may be viewed. To protect the optical modules, the head-mounted device may be provided with photochromic lenses that darken and block sunlight when exposed to ultraviolet light and/or may be provided with shutters, lens caps, protective movable housing portions, tunable lenses that can be adjusted to defocus sunlight, and/or other protective structures for protecting lenses from scratches and for protecting displays from damage due to excessive sunlight exposure. Electrically adjustable protective structures may be operated based on sensor measurements.

Head-mounted support structures may be used to support the display and lenses. One or more external displays may be publically viewable while the head-mounted device is being worn. Abstract: An electronic device such as a head mounted device may have a display that displays an image for a user. Head-mounted support structures may be used to support the display and to support lenses. The image on the display is visible through the lenses from eye boxes. The presence of the user's nose and the presence of opaque lens holder structures presents a risk that some of the image will be obscured by undesired black regions. To reduce or eliminate these black regions, facial illumination may be generated using a light source in the electronic device. The facial illumination may be provided by a light source such as a light-emitting diode die or laser or may be provided by a corner region of the display that contains pixels that do not supply any part of the image.
